Grass seed is simply the seed of grass. So how much does it cost per jin on the market? What varieties are available? And how is it best planted? It is understood that different varieties have different prices, and different discounts apply depending on whether you buy a lot or a little. At present, lawn seed prices on the market mostly range from just over ten yuan to sixty or seventy yuan, among which the cheaper ones include Evergreen, slope-protection king, tall fescue, Manila grass and so on, which can be used for sowing on football fields or large open areas to stabilize soil and prevent sand movement, offering relatively good value for money. The more upmarket grass types include putting green grass, carpet grass, creeping bentgrass, Bermuda grass and so on. Among them, putting green grass tolerates trampling and is suitable for greening the walking areas of high-end villas or for planting on golf courses.

What varieties of grass seed are there?

1. Longdong purple alfalfa is currently the leading local variety with the largest cultivated area. Generally, dryland grassland has low water content and high hay yield, making it the preferred high-yield local grass seed for dry farming areas. Its plant height is about 1 m, the plant form is semi-upright, it is a taproot type with deep rooting, has many branches per plant, fine and dense stems, and small but thick leaves of a deep green color. The flowers are deep purple, the inflorescence is relatively small and compact, and the pod is dark brown and spiral-shaped. The seed is kidney-shaped and yellow, with a 1000-grain weight of about 1.8 g.

2. Aljin Gang has the characteristics of strong stress resistance, wide adaptability, excellent grass quality and very high grass yield. The grass is tender and rich in leaves, with a crude protein content of over 20%, and it has strong resistance to brown patch and Verticillium wilt.

3. Golden Queen prefers a warm, semi-arid climate, has strong stress resistance, is extremely drought-tolerant and highly cold-resistant. It is rich in leaves, tender in grass quality, and very rich in crude protein, vitamins and minerals. It is a new purple alfalfa variety of excellent quality and very high yield.

4. Yellow sweet clover likes to grow in warm, humid or semi-arid sandy land. Its root system is well developed, it has fairly strong drought and cold resistance, can withstand low temperatures of -30°C, has strong saline-alkali resistance, and grows more vigorously than purple alfalfa on poor soil.

5. Sainfoin has a well-developed root system and can grow on hillside land with about 200 mm of rainfall. Its cold resistance is moderate, and when covered with snow it can overwinter safely even at a low temperature of -25°C in winter. Its stems and leaves are luxuriant, the grass is tender, and it is rich in nutrients. Besides protein, it contains abundant vitamins and minerals. It has good palatability, is liked by all kinds of livestock, and livestock fed it fresh do not get bloat.

6. Crownvetch has a well-developed root system, strong regrowth after entering the soil and strong disease resistance. It can spread through underground creeping roots and aboveground creeping stems, has strong soil-binding ability, and is widely used for soil and water conservation, highway slope protection, embankment protection and erosion control in areas with damaged ground surfaces. Crownvetch has strong survival ability, luxuriant and tender stems and leaves, and is rich in nutrients and minerals. It has good palatability and a digestibility of up to 75%. It is an excellent forage grass that cattle and sheep like to eat, can be ensiled and made into hay, is cold-resistant, and can overwinter safely at a low temperature of -35°C.

7. Common vetch prefers a cool, dry climate, has strong stress resistance and wide adaptability, and can be planted in the vast areas of our city. It has strong cold resistance and cold tolerance, and tolerates poor soil. Its stems and leaves are luxuriant, the grass is tender, it is rich in nutrients and has good palatability. It is liked by all kinds of livestock, is an excellent feed crop for both forage and seed use, and is also a very good multiple-cropping forage and green manure crop. The seed is excellent concentrated feed, and the stems can be fed fresh, made into hay, or directly grazed.

8. Sorghum-Sudan grass has a well-developed root system, can reach 2-3 m in height, has strong tillering ability and is rich in leaves. Sorghum-Sudan grass is a warmth-loving plant. Compared with traditional varieties, it has a longer vegetative period, higher digestibility and higher grass yield. It also has strong drought resistance, is heat-tolerant and fairly cold-tolerant, and is not demanding about soil, so it can be planted on sandy loam, slightly acidic clay or mildly saline-alkali land, and shows very good late-maturing characteristics. Sorghum-Sudan grass has high nutritional value and good adaptability, with a crude protein content of 13.2%, an in vitro digestibility of 77%, and a lignin content that is 40-60% lower than that of ordinary varieties.

9. Cup plant has strong overwintering ability, wide adaptability, is cold-resistant and tolerates high temperatures. It can overwinter safely even at -38°C, and can grow safely at an average monthly temperature of 32°C. It tolerates waterlogging and can still grow slowly even with surface water standing for four months. It has strong resistance to pests and diseases, tolerates saline-alkali soil, but has poor drought tolerance. When young, cup plant is crisp and juicy, with a crude protein content of 23.4%, a high and rich amino acid content, a nitrogen-free extract of 6.7%, high digestibility and good adaptability. It is suitable for fresh feeding and ensiling, and in the north it can be cut 2-3 times, with a fresh grass yield of 8000-10000 kg per mu.

10. Fodder beet is a feed crop with relatively high productivity in temperate climate zones, and is also a valuable succulent feed in autumn, winter and spring. It has good palatability, high digestibility and is easy to store, and is a fattening "fruit" for chickens, cattle and sheep.

11. Grain amaranth has wide adaptability, strong stress resistance, high photosynthetic efficiency and high biological yield. It is drought-resistant, highly tolerant of waterlogging and saline-alkali soil, grows quickly, has extremely strong regrowth and a high propagation coefficient. It can be cut 2-3 times each year, with a fresh grass yield of 3000-4500 kg per mu and a seed yield of 150-300 kg per mu.

How do you plant grass seed?

1. For general home planting, simply choose fescue, which is fairly cold-resistant, drought-tolerant and shade-tolerant. It is suitable for home planting and care.

2. The seeds need to be treated, disinfected with a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution, and after disinfection the seeds are soaked for 2 days.

3. Level the ground, turn the soil up, and apply fertilizer in advance. Also water thoroughly 12 hours before sowing.

4. Scatter the soaked seeds by hand or with a aerial seeding tray. After scattering, cover with rice straw or other netting to ensure ground moisture.

5. During the sowing period, observe the soil moisture and the germination of the seeds in good time. If the weather is dry, water appropriately to keep it moist.

6. Pay attention to the condition of the covering. In the first 2 days, the covering must absolutely not be uncovered. Under suitable temperatures, roots and sprouts will appear in about 3 days, at which point the covering can be removed gradually.

7. Later, water regularly in the morning and evening so that the grass seed can survive normally.
