What are the control methods for the rice leaf beetle and the millet stem borer?
Rice is the most important and longest-cultivated grain species in the genus Oryza; millet is a plant of the grass family Poaceae, called ji or su in ancient times, also known as liang. Both are among humanity's food crops. But during growth they always suffer pests and diseases that affect yield. Below we introduce control methods for the rice leaf beetle and the millet stem borer.
I. Control methods for the rice leaf beetle
The rice leaf beetle is most active in the morning and on overcast days, prefers cool and humid conditions, occurs mostly in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, and overwinters as an adult.
1. In conjunction with composting, clear weeds in winter and spring to kill overwintering adults.
2. In conjunction with intertillage, first use a bamboo pole to knock the larvae down and press them into the soil.
3. Chemical control: spray with 20% fenpropathrin-malathion emulsifiable concentrate at 50 ml per mu, or 30% high-efficiency triazophos at 100-150 ml, or 20% fenvalerate at 35-40 ml, mixed with 50 kg of water.
II. Control methods for the millet stem borer
1. In conjunction with autumn plowing and spring plowing, collect and burn millet stubble.
2. Chop overwintering millet straw into pieces or treat it in a sealed manner before Qingming Festival.
3. In conjunction with thinning seedlings, pull up and dispose of infested plants.
4. Spray with pyrethroid insecticides, applying two consecutive sprays after seedling establishment and at the jointing stage. You can spray with 10% high-efficiency cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate at 2000 times dilution or 20% fenpropathrin at 3000 times dilution.
As for the damage caused by the millet stem borer, the first-generation larvae bore into the stems in mid-June, causing dead hearts; the second-generation larvae bore into the stems and cause damage from late July to early August, and infested plants tend to lodge and break in the wind.
