Garlic sprouts are one of the more common vegetables in daily life. They can not only be eaten raw, but can also be used as an ingredient for stir-frying meat, making soup, and so on. Most importantly, they can also boost immunity and promote digestion, so many people like to eat them. So when is the best time to plant garlic sprouts? How should they be planted so they grow fast? How many jin of garlic sprouts can one jin of garlic produce?

When is the best time to plant?

Garlic is generally sown in October each year and harvested in June of the following year. Because the growth cycle differs, it depends on climate, variety and sowing date. Garlic can grow into garlic sprouts in spring.

Planting methods

1. Soil selection

The production area for pollution-free garlic sprouts should be far from pollution sources, with clean and convenient irrigation water and fresh air. For the planting site, sandy loam or loam soil is preferred, and continuous cropping on the same land should be avoided. Sloping land or plots with low soil fertility should not be chosen; instead, choose plots with high soil fertility, deep soil layers and good drainage and irrigation facilities.

2. Variety selection

In order to make garlic sprouts early-maturing and high-yielding with a long supply period, choose approved excellent white-skinned garlic that is not prone to degeneration, has thick leaves, fresh and tender leaf color, a thick and long pseudostem, is early-maturing, disease-resistant, high-yielding and good in market quality, such as Golmud white-skinned garlic, Zhangye white-skinned garlic, and so on.

3. Seed garlic preparation and treatment

Remove diseased, dry-rotted and damaged garlic seeds, and select neat, plump garlic cloves with no disease spots, no mildew, no insect damage, no mechanical injury and an undamaged terminal bud as seed garlic. During the process of planting seed garlic, classify the cloves according to size and plant cloves of the same class concentrated in the same area. This can avoid uneven emergence and inconsistent growth during planting, ensure normal growth of garlic sprouts, and allow them to be marketed in batches on schedule. Before sowing, first soak the seeds in clean water for 12h, then soak them in a 200-fold solution of 50% carbendazim wettable powder for 30min, then soak them in potassium dihydrogen phosphate for 4-6h, remove and drain.

4. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose grain crops or non-onion-and-garlic vegetable land as the previous crop. Before sowing, deeply plow to loosen the soil, break up clods and level the soil, with a plowing depth of 25-30cm, and determine the fertilizer application amount and method according to the local soil fertility level and the fertilizer requirements of garlic sprouts. Organic fertilizer, bio-organic fertilizer, diammonium phosphate and urea can be used, with amounts of 45-60t/hm2, 0.75-0.90t/hm2, 0.375t/hm2 and 75kg/hm2 respectively.

5. Sowing

First, the sowing period. Sow in stages and batches from mid-April to mid-May. Second, the sowing rate. The seed rate is 1.80-1.95t/hm2. Third, the sowing method. Make beds on plots with sufficient base fertilizer, and use the method of opening furrows and dibbling when sowing, with a row spacing of 13-15cm and a plant spacing of 4-5cm, keeping 600,000-750,000 plants/hm2. The sowing depth is 4-5cm. When placing the seed garlic, keep it upright, with the tops level and the bottoms uneven, and cover with a consistent thickness of soil, generally just covering the tips of the garlic cloves.

6. Water and fertilizer management

First, water management. Garlic sprouts have different water requirements at different growth stages. After sowing, water thoroughly to create good conditions for garlic sprout germination. Water garlic sprouts once more after emergence, and after the soil surface dries, shallow plowing can be carried out to reduce the chance of soil compaction. In the later growth process of garlic sprouts, irrigate timely according to the growth condition of the garlic sprouts and weather conditions. Second, fertilizer management. Investigate the local soil fertility status, combine it with the fertilizer requirement pattern of garlic sprouts, and fertilize according to the principles of combining organic fertilizer with inorganic fertilizer, combining base fertilizer with topdressing, and balanced fertilization. In the early stage of fertilization, mainly use nitrogen fertilizer to promote seedling growth. Combined with loosening the soil and weeding, apply urea at 75kg/hm2 as topdressing, once every 15d, for a total of 3 times. Every 7d, spray 0.30% potassium dihydrogen phosphate on the leaves once, for 3 consecutive sprays. Do not apply any fertilizer in the 20d before harvest.

7. Pest and disease control

The main pests and diseases of garlic sprouts include soft rot, gray mold, purple blotch, late blight, rust, leaf blight, garlic maggot, white grub, thrips, leaf miner, aphids, and so on. Control methods can be solved by agricultural control, chemical control, physical control and other methods.

8. Timely harvest

When the aboveground part of the garlic sprouts grows to 40-50cm, green garlic sprouts can be harvested in batches at the early stage of bulb expansion (7-8 leaves). Early garlic is harvested in early August, and late garlic is harvested in late September. At harvest, remove the dead top leaves, clean off the soil from the roots, and bundle them for sale.

Garlic also comes in small sizes, such as Sichuan garlic and 4.6-clove types, which are all not large; one jin has about 10-20 or more heads. White garlic and red garlic have 3-5 heads per jin. Small garlic has 4-8 cloves per head, and there is also the garlic core. Large garlic has 7-12 cloves per head, and also has a garlic core.
