Where are the main lychee-producing regions? A full breakdown of the harvest season
“A galloping horse raises dust as the concubine smiles, no one knows it is the lychees that arrive” - the lychee, with its elegant name and excellent flavor, is renowned throughout the world. Thin skin, abundant juice, thick flesh, small pit, crisp and refreshing, bursting with sweet juice - it stands alone at the top. Beloved by people from ancient times to the present, so in our country, where are the main lychee-growing regions? When is the harvest season?
In which regions are lychees mainly grown?
The lychee is a famous Lingnan delicacy, a precious subtropical fruit, and one of the four famous Lingnan fruits (the lychee, along with banana, pineapple and longan, are known together as the “four great fruits of the southern country”). It originated in southern China and has a cultivation history of more than 2000 years.
Maoming in Guangdong, Xinhui in Guangdong, Shenzhen in Guangdong, Conghua in Guangdong, Zengcheng in Guangdong, Haikou in Hainan,
Nanning in Guangxi, Zhangzhou in Fujian, and Putian in Fujian all abound in lychees. Putian in Fujian in particular, because of its abundant lychee production, is also known as “Lychee City&rdquo.
When are lychees harvested?
The lychee harvest time varies across different production regions. Hainan's lychees are the earliest to ripen and be harvested; by around early May, fresh and delicious lychees can already be picked.
Hainan's lychees are mainly distributed in Qiongshan City in places such as Yongxing, Shishan, Mei'an, Qiutan, Shi'an Road and Longqiao. Better varieties include Yangshan's goose-egg lychee, seedless lychee, yellow-skin clove and toad red from Qiongshan City. Don't be too greedy when eating lychees - eating too many can easily cause internal heat. Baoting County is Hainan's largest early-maturing lychee production base.
Different varieties also have different harvest seasons.
Sanyuehong is harvested in late March; Yuanzhi in late May or early June; Heiye in mid-June; Gua, Huaizhi, Guiwei and Nuomizi from late June to early July; Yuanhong and Lanzhu in mid-July; and Chenzi in late July.
From this we can see that basically June to July is the period when lychee harvesting is most concentrated.
Tips:
Contraindications for eating lychees
1. Not suitable to eat on an empty stomach
Lychees have a very high sugar content; eating them on an empty stomach will irritate the gastric mucosa and cause symptoms of stomach pain and bloating.
2. Not suitable to eat too many at one time
Eating a large amount of lychees can cause hypoglycemia. This is because most of the sugar they contain is fructose, and after fructose is absorbed by the body it must undergo a series of enzymatic catalysis before it can be converted into glucose for the human body to use. Eating too many lychees in a short time will cause a large amount of fructose to accumulate in the blood vessels, making the converting enzyme “in short supply” and unable to convert fructose into glucose in time. In addition, fructose also stimulates the human body to secrete insulin, thereby causing an insufficient supply of glucose in the blood and leading to symptoms of hypoglycemia.
3. Diabetics should eat with caution
Lychees have a high sugar content and are not suitable for diabetics.
4. People with pharyngitis or tonsillitis, yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity, hemorrhoids, constipation, blood heat and other conditions should not eat them, to avoid worsening the condition.
