How Long Does a Hyacinth Take to Bloom? After-Bloom Care, Uses and Flower Meanings Explained
Hyacinth, also known as Dutch narcissus, Western narcissus, five-color narcissus and shiyangjin, has a very long cultivation history dating back to the 15th century. So how long does it generally take to bloom? What uses does it have? What should you do after the flowers fade? What is its flower meaning? According to flower grower Aunt Liu, the normal blooming period of the hyacinth is early spring. But like the tulip, hyacinths that have undergone cold treatment can bloom around the Spring Festival. Grown from mature bulbs, they generally take two months to bloom. If you start cultivating in early December, they will bloom around the Spring Festival.
What uses does the hyacinth have?
1. Hyacinths can be enjoyed for their beauty
Being enjoyed for their beauty is the most important role of the hyacinth. In spring, this plant can be used to lay out flower beds, can be planted along the edges of lawns, and can even be grown as a potted plant to display indoors. Whichever planting method is used, the hyacinth can beautify the environment and bring people pleasure and delight.
2. Hyacinths can relieve fatigue
Hyacinths have a unique fragrance, which can directly stimulate the human nervous system, relax the nerves, and help stabilize mood and reduce depression. In addition, placing hyacinths indoors can refresh the mind and reduce feelings of fatigue.
3. Hyacinths can be made into essential oil
Besides being enjoyed for their beauty, hyacinth flowers can also be extracted into a fragrant essential oil with an appealing scent. Using this essential oil can soothe body and mind and relax the emotions. However, the bulbs of the hyacinth are toxic and cannot be eaten. If accidentally eaten, poisoning will occur, with dizziness, diarrhea and stomach cramps being the most common symptoms of poisoning.
What should you do after the hyacinth flowers fade?
1. Continue growing in water: After the flowers of a water-cultured hyacinth fade, continue growing it in water until early June, when the temperature gradually rises, the leaves will turn yellow and withered and the plant enters its summer dormancy period.
2. Cut off the leaves: Cut off all the yellowed and withered leaves of the hyacinth during its summer dormancy period, and also cut off all the roots.
3. Refrigerate the hyacinth: Place the bulb in a cool, ventilated place to dry for 1 to 2 days (never expose it to the sun). After it is completely dry, wrap the bulb well in newspaper and put it in a jar, then place it in the refrigerator's cold storage compartment (not the freezer).
4. Temperature requirements: During the summer, the temperature must not exceed 10 degrees, otherwise the bulb will easily rot.
5. Replanting: When the temperature gradually turns cooler in November and late autumn arrives, take out the hyacinth bulb that has been stored for a summer and place it on the mouth of a suitable container, add water to about 1CM from the bottom of the bulb, then place it in a completely dark and cool place at 5°C to encourage root growth. After about 25 days, roots will begin to sprout, and when the roots have grown to 2CM, you can follow normal hyacinth care methods and grow it until it blooms. Generally, with this cycle, hyacinths can be grown for about 3 years, and by the 4th year the original bulb will basically no longer bloom.
