How Much Seed and Fertilizer per Mu of Corn? High-Yield Variety Recommendations
Corn seed is the propagule capable of growing into a mature corn plant; it is formed from the ovule after pollination and fertilization. So do you know how much corn seed is needed per mu of land? Which high-yield varieties are there? How much fertilizer should be applied? According to Uncle Li, a corn grower in Xinyang, Henan, planting corn uses about 4 jin of seed per mu, which is enough. Normally, if single-seed sowing is used, it is about 40 jin per hectare, give or take no more than 5 jin. This depends on the size of the seed grains. Double-seed sowing is 80 jin. The normal chemical fertilizer application rate, if topdressing is used, is 6-8 bags of 15-15-15 sulfur-based fertilizer, depending on the plot.

How much fertilizer should be applied to one mu of corn land?
1. During the growth process, corn needs to absorb large amounts of nutrient elements from the soil, among which nitrogen and potassium are required in the largest amounts. Generally, for every 100 kg of corn grain produced per mu, it is necessary to absorb 2.5 kg of pure nitrogen, 1.2 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 2.0 kg of potassium oxide. The ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium is 1:0.48:0.8. The fertilizer requirement increases as the yield increases. Generally, the whole growth period of corn requires 10-16 kg of pure nitrogen, 3-5 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 5-8 kg of potassium oxide. Medium and trace elements such as zinc, boron, and manganese should be used according to the soil nutrient supply situation, supplementing deficiencies in a targeted manner.
2. In potassium-rich areas, the amount of potassium applied can be appropriately reduced. Corn is relatively sensitive to zinc, so zinc sulfate (0.1-0.3%) or other zinc-containing foliar fertilizers can be sprayed on the leaves at the jointing stage. Corn needs less fertilizer before jointing, the most from jointing to the large flare stage, and then gradually less afterward. Based on this pattern, the number and amount of topdressing should be reasonably adjusted. Topdressing is generally carried out twice, and can be done 10 days after jointing and 10-15 days before tasseling at the large flare stage, with less first and more later (maintaining a ratio of 2:3). For plots using one-time topdressing, it can be applied at the early large flare stage.
