When to Sow Cherry Radishes? A Detailed Guide to Growing Methods
As a small type of radish, the cherry radish is small in appearance and bright in color, and is deeply loved by girls. Some friends want to grow cherry radishes at home, and so a series of questions arise: When to sow cherry radishes? What growing methods are there? Today we will find out together.
When to sow cherry radishes?
Generally speaking, cherry radishes can be sown all year round, but in summer the leaves sometimes grow too large, which leads to incomplete development of the root. Therefore, the best sowing periods are March to May and September to October. The suitable temperature for germination is 15 to 30°C. After germination, they can be moved to a place with plenty of sunlight. When planting in spring, special attention must be paid to pests such as aphids and diamondback moths.
Growing methods for cherry radishes
1. Prepare cherry radish seeds, a flower pot, potting soil and fertilizer. The potting soil should preferably be a loose, breathable sandy loam. Radishes like potassium fertilizer and prefer a sandy loam that holds water well, drains well, and is loose and airy.
2. Water the potting soil thoroughly, then scatter the seeds on the surface of the soil, cover with about 1 cm of soil, and keep the soil moist. At 20 to 25°C, they sprout in about 3 to 4 days. You can also sow them in holes, with 2 to 3 seeds per hole and a spacing of about 5 cm.
3. Generally, about one week after germination, true leaves begin to grow, and the shoots and buds gradually become dense; at this point you can thin the seedlings. As the leaves gradually grow, when they reach about 4 to 5 leaves, you can thin the seedlings again, leaving a spacing of about 5 cm between plants. After thinning, add soil around the plants to strengthen and stabilize them. About 20 days after sowing, apply solid fertilizer.
4. Radishes have relatively strict light requirements. During the growth process, they require light; insufficient light affects the accumulation of photosynthetic products, the fleshy root expands slowly, and the quality becomes poorer. Radishes are long-day crops and can enter the flowering stage under more than 12 hours of daylight.
5. When cherry radishes grow leaves and the stems gradually thicken, if the soil is dry at this time, you need to water them with sufficient water immediately, because once the water is insufficient, cherry radishes will become hard and bent. After true leaves grow, liquid fertilizer can be applied every 10 days.
6. Usually after one month, the roots of the plants begin to swell and become exposed, which means they are ready to harvest. When the swelling and exposure of the roots gradually becomes obvious, they can be harvested. Before harvesting, appropriately reduce watering. At harvest time, you can first water the soil thoroughly, then pull the whole plant out.
Development prospects of cherry radishes
The radish is originally a common vegetable consumed in very large quantities by the Chinese people, and the cherry radish has advantages such as being small and exquisite, attractive, and easy to eat, placing it even above ordinary varieties. For example, around the Spring Festival, planting it in large quantities in protected cultivation to supply the needs of the festival can bring relatively high economic benefits.
