Spruce saplings are the seedlings of spruce, with strong drought resistance, and are the preferred tree species for landscaping. So how much does one sell for? How many can be planted per mu? What are the planting techniques? From a nursery base in Hebei, we learned that prices vary for different specifications of saplings, for example 1.5 m spruce container seedlings, 16*16 container 21 yuan/plant; 21*21 container 26 yuan/plant; 30*30 container 40 yuan/plant.

How many spruce saplings can be planted per mu?

The afforestation density of spruce should vary with different site conditions. In low mountain areas, considering the trunk development and branching characteristics of spruce, as well as moisture and other conditions, the afforestation density should be somewhat higher, generally with a row spacing of 1.2-1.5 m and a plant spacing of 0.75-1 m, 450-700 plants per mu; on cutting sites with better site conditions, the row spacing is 1.5-2 m, the plant spacing can reach 1-1.5 m, and more than 300 plants per mu are maintained.

What are the planting techniques for spruce saplings?

Spruce has a relatively strong shade tolerance and can endure insufficient light under the forest canopy for as long as 25 years. Under conditions of side-light shading, natural regeneration is good, and there are more naturally regenerated young trees in small burned areas and forest gaps, but regeneration under dense canopy is poor. It is not strict about climate requirements and is mostly distributed in high mountain zones or high-latitude areas with an annual average of 4-12°C, annual precipitation of 400-900 mm, and annual relative humidity above 60%. It has relatively strong cold resistance and can endure low temperatures below -30°C, but the tender branches have poor frost resistance. Under mild and humid conditions, it grows very well in acidic to slightly acidic brown forest soil or brown cinnamon soil. The standing volume per hectare in the forest areas of Sichuan and Xinjiang exceeds 1000 cubic meters, and in the forest areas of Tibet it exceeds 2000 cubic meters. Spruce is mostly a shallow-rooted tree species, with an inconspicuous main root and well-developed lateral roots, and about more than 3/4 of the root system is concentrated in the surface layer.

Management methods after planting:

1. Shading

Tianshan spruce is a shade-tolerant tree species, especially at the seedling stage, and requires certain shaded conditions. Therefore, the method of building a shed for shade is adopted. After all the spruce seedlings have emerged, the bamboo blinds can be rolled up at 6 p.m. every day until 9 a.m. the next day. On August 30, all bamboo blinds are removed to promote seedling growth and lignification.

2. Weeding

In order to reduce massive evaporation of soil moisture, loosen the surface soil, and increase soil aeration, there should be no weeds in the seedbed.

3. Pest and disease control

After a large number of seedlings have emerged, 1% carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl can be sprayed, with a dosage of 60 kg per 667 square meters. After that, spray once every 7-8 days for a total of 4 sprays.

4. Irrigation

According to the weather and soil conditions, water timely and appropriately with a watering can to keep it moist.

5. Overwintering

Spruce seedlings are tender, have a low degree of lignification, and have weak cold resistance, so they are prone to freezing damage, especially freezing damage and physiological drought in early spring, which often causes large numbers of seedlings to die. Therefore, before snow accumulates in winter, effective measures should be taken to do a good job of overwintering and freeze prevention. Before the soil freezes, sieve and disinfect sawdust and sheep manure, mix them into a 1:3 mixture (1 part sawdust, 3 parts sheep manure), and evenly cover the seedlings, preferably covering over the tops of the seedlings.
