Golden phoebe is a precious wood unique to China. Its representative species is nanmu (Phoebe zhennan), with a flowering period from April to May and a fruiting period from September to October, growing wild or cultivated. So what is its price per jin? What varieties are there? Which is the best? What benefits does it have for the human body? It is understood that the current market price of golden phoebe bog wood is 30,000 yuan per ton, 30 yuan per kilogram, and the price of roots is higher than that of trunks. The price of golden phoebe bog wood with good grain is calculated separately, priced according to the type of grain.

What varieties of golden phoebe are there?

1. Zhennan (Phoebe zhennan)

Produced in western Hubei, northwestern Guizhou and Sichuan, China. Wild or cultivated; wild ones are mostly found in broad-leaved forests below 1500 m altitude.

This species is a tall tree with a straight trunk and leaves that remain green all year round, making it an excellent landscaping tree species. The wood is fragrant, with straight grain and a fine, dense structure, not easily deformed or split, making it an excellent timber for construction, high-grade furniture and so on.

2. Minnan (Phoebe bournei)

The wood has straight grain, a fine and dense structure, is fragrant, not easily deformed or attacked by insects, and not easily split, making it a good timber for construction, high-grade furniture and so on.

3. Zinan (Phoebe sheareri)

Produced in the Yangtze River basin and areas to the south in China. Mostly grows in mountain broad-leaved forests below 1000 m altitude.

The wood has straight grain, a fine structure, is hard in texture and highly rot-resistant, and is used as timber for construction, shipbuilding, furniture and so on.

4. Runnan (Machilus)

Produced in Sichuan, China. Grows as an isolated tree or in forests, at altitudes of 1000 m or below.

The trunk is upright, with a broad umbrella-shaped crown; the wood is fine-grained and fragrant, used for making beams, columns and furniture.

Which golden phoebe is the best?

Recently, the price of golden phoebe has soared on the market, causing some consumers to blindly buy golden phoebe as an investment, which is highly inadvisable, because identifying golden phoebe requires considerable expertise, and ordinary people can easily be mistaken.

There are currently three main types of golden phoebe on the market. The first is new golden phoebe, which the state prohibits from being felled and which is extremely scarce in quantity. The second is old golden phoebe, taken down during repairs to ancient temples, as well as unearthed from ancient tombs. The third is ebony golden phoebe buried deep in the ground through changes in rivers and the earth's crust, namely bog golden phoebe, mainly produced in Sichuan.

What benefits does golden phoebe have for the human body?

1. It is a good medicine for curing illnesses, and can be used in combination with other Chinese medicines, or used alone as an independent medicinal material. It can roughly treat the following diseases: cholera, stomach diseases, purulent ear discharge (otitis media), athlete's foot, cholera with muscle cramps and other conditions.

2. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory: aromatic substances can awaken the spleen and resolve dampness, open the orifices and refresh the mind, and raise the clear while transforming the turbid. Living for a long time in an elegant study room decorated with nanmu, accompanied by fragrant nanmu furniture, the faint fragrance given off by golden phoebe can play a role in resolving dampness through aroma and awakening the spleen to dispel turbidity.

3. It ranks first among China's four famous woods: nanmu, catalpa, zi and camphor, and is hailed as China's “national wood”. Nanmu has a fresh fragrance, is a tall tree reaching a height of over ten zhang, with a diameter at breast height of up to 1 m. It is a neutral to shade-tolerant tree species, with deep roots, a long lifespan and a slow growth rate. Nanmu wood is warm and smooth in nature, does not warp or crack, has moderate hardness and excellent toughness, so it is highly useful. In ancient times, the vessels of the state altars and magnificent buildings were all built with nanmu, making it a veritable “pillar of the nation”.

Appendix: Methods for identifying golden phoebe

1. Color

Golden phoebe must be old zhennan material; the wood color is generally yellow with a hint of light green, or yellow-brown.

2. Grain

Golden phoebe has a fine, dense and magnificent grain, exceptionally exquisite, with a warm and soft texture; the freshly cut surface is yellow-brown with green, with a strong luster. Its most obvious feature is that under light it gives off silky golden rays, and it has auspicious patterns, such as tiger-skin grain, phoenix patterns, sunset glow, sea of clouds, waves, mountain peaks and so on;

3. Fragrance

Golden phoebe has a faint fragrance of nanmu, with a certain effect of repelling mosquitoes and insects. For genuine golden phoebe, starting one month after it is harvested, the fragrance slowly becomes richer and is released outward. Through the oxidation of time and air, it not only does not lose its charming fragrance, but instead gains the mellow scent of the essence of sun and moon. The longer it settles, the more obvious the fragrance; after one year, new golden phoebe material gives off a very obvious fresh, elegant fragrance.

4. Quality

Under light, golden phoebe has a crystal-clear, transparent or semi-transparent texture, with a very high grade of golden silk, and the crystallization rate of the entire piece of wood reaches over 80%;

5. Texture

Genuine golden phoebe has thin bark that is especially soft, feeling like high-grade napkin paper when stroked by hand, with the surface showing layer upon layer of cracking and easily peeling off.
