Carrot Seed Price per Jin, Sowing, Harvesting, Growth Cycle and Planting Methods
Carrot, also known as red radish or gansun, is a variety of wild carrot and is widely cultivated throughout the country. It is distributed in Europe and Southeast Asia. So how much does its seed cost per jin? When to sow and harvest? How long is the growth cycle? How to plant it? According to Master Liu, a carrot grower in Hunan, the currently better carrot varieties include Japanese Kuroda Gosun, Improved Kuroda Gosun, Hiroshima, Yingshanhong and Korean Gosun, as well as traditional Chinese farm varieties such as Xiaodinghong and Zhadihong and other local carrot varieties, which can be chosen for planting, with a price of about 55 yuan/jin.
When are carrots sown and harvested?
1. Cultivation season: Carrots are mainly sown in autumn, and late August is suitable for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. If sown in March-April, in mountainous areas with higher altitude, because the temperature is still low, film mulching can be used in the early stage.
2. Carrots are generally sown in summer and autumn and harvested in autumn and winter. According to the characteristics that the seedling stage needs high temperature and the root enlargement stage requires coolness, as well as the climate of different regions and different varieties, arrange the sowing period so that the seedling stage is in a relatively high temperature season and the root enlargement stage is in a cool season.
How long is the carrot growth cycle?
The vegetative growth period of carrot is 80-140 days. The germination period is about 10-15 days, the seedling period is about 25 days, the leaf growth peak period (also called rosette stage) is about 30 days, followed by the fleshy root growth period, 30-70 days. Seeds can germinate at 4-6 degrees C, and the optimum germination temperature is 20-25 degrees C. The leaves have strong adaptability, and the straight root enlargement period requires 13-23 degrees C, with a night temperature of 13-18 degrees C. The seedling period can be arranged in months with higher or lower temperatures, so that the product growth period is in the month with the optimum temperature.
How to plant carrots?
1. Suitable temperature for carrot planting
Carrot is a semi-cold-tolerant vegetable. The suitable germination temperature is 20-25 degrees C, the suitable growth temperature is 18-23 degrees C during the day, and the night temperature is 13-18 degrees C. Too high or too low temperature is unfavorable to growth. Carrot has a well-developed root system; therefore, deep plowing of the soil plays an important role in promoting vigorous root growth and fleshy root enlargement.
2. Soil requirements for carrot planting
The soil should be deep sandy loam, with pH 5-8 being more suitable. The required soil moisture is 60-80% of the maximum water-holding capacity of the soil. If there is too much water in the early growth stage, the aboveground part will grow too vigorously, which will affect the enlargement and growth of the fleshy root. If there is insufficient water in the later growth stage, the straight root cannot fully expand, resulting in reduced yield. Soil that is too sticky or the application of undecomposed base fertilizer will hinder the normal growth of the fleshy root and produce deformed roots.
3. Watering and fertilizing carrots at the seedling stage
When the seedlings have 7-8 leaves, take advantage of moist soil to hoe deeply to control seedling growth, promote downward extension of the main root and development of fibrous roots, and inhibit excessive leaf growth. After 10-20 days, when the fleshy root has clearly enlarged, begin full watering and keep the soil moist regularly. At 3-4 true leaves, apply 2-3 kg of ammonium sulfate, 3-4 kg of superphosphate, and 2-3 kg of potassium fertilizer per mu. When thinning to a stand, combine with watering and topdress 10 kg of diammonium phosphate and 3-4 kg of potassium chloride per mu to promote strong and rapid seedling growth. When the fleshy root begins to grow, topdress with quick-acting organic liquid fertilizer or diammonium phosphate, potassium chloride, etc. Spring carrots are harvested 90-100 days after sowing; autumn carrots are harvested and stored before the severe winter arrives.
