The "World's Number One Fruit" Loquat: Can Its Seeds Be Grown as Potted Plants, How to Plant Them, and How Long Until They Sprout
Loquat is a relatively common fruit in the south, and like longan, the leftover seeds can be used to grow potted plants, and the potted plants grown can enhance the indoor greening effect. So how do you grow loquat seeds as potted plants? How long after planting will they sprout?
Freshly planted loquat seeds generally sprout in 7-10 days, but you need to master certain planting techniques:
Preparation before planting:
Since loquat seeds are relatively large and are not difficult to obtain, unlike extracting seeds from dragon fruit and guava which is so troublesome. So you need to soak the seeds in water for about 7 days, and then start planting. Remember to change the water every day, otherwise they are prone to rot. When planting, place the seed with the “pointed end” facing down, because that is the growth point. If you are worried that it will not grow stably enough or that the seed will not have sufficiently close contact with the soil, you can bury the seed a little deeper. Since loquat seeds are relatively large, and loquat leaves are also relatively large, if you do not want the potted plant to look especially crowded, the spacing between seeds can be slightly larger; you can plant them with a bit more spacing than in the picture below.
Specific planting techniques:
1. Germination
Many fruit pits are wrapped in wet paper towels to germinate, but loquat pits cannot be germinated with paper towels. They can only be soaked in clean water, with the water changed daily. Once the seeds show sprouts, they can be sown.
2. Choosing a pot and sowing
A small plastic flower pot is sufficient. Note that the bottom must have drainage holes so water can flow out. You can also place some small mesh at the bottom of the flower pot. Pour in crushed fine soil, about 4CM thick, then place the germinated loquat seeds on top of the soil, 4-6 seeds. Then cover with soil, about 5mm thick, enough to cover the seeds. After covering with soil, water appropriately.
3. Care
Finally, place the flower pot in a cool place or where there is scattered sunlight, and water so that the soil dries between waterings. Seedlings should emerge in about 2 weeks. In less than 2 months they can grow into large seedlings. Look at the ones I planted, they look quite nice, right? Once the saplings grow a bit bigger, they can be transplanted into the ground. The small bonsai is also very cute!
[Precautions]
1. It is best to place mesh at the bottom of the flower pot.
2. After loquat seeds dry, peel off the outer skin.
3. After planting, wait patiently and do not be impatient!
