The jujube tree is a deciduous small tree, rarely a shrub, reaching over 10 m tall; the bark is brown or grayish-brown; the flowering period is May-July, and the fruiting period is August-September. So where is it suitable for planting? When is the best time to plant it? What medicine should be sprayed if it gets bugs?

Where is the jujube tree suitable for planting?

The jujube tree is a sun-loving species of the warm temperate zone. It likes light and prefers a dry climate. It is cold-resistant, heat-resistant, and also resistant to drought and waterlogging. It is not demanding about soil; except for marshland and heavily alkaline soil, it can grow in plains, sandy land, gullies, and mountainous areas. Its adaptable pH range is between pH 5.5-8.5, and it grows best in fertile slightly alkaline or neutral sandy loam. It has a well-developed root system and strong sprouting ability. It is resistant to smoke. It is not resistant to water mist.

When is the best time to plant a jujube tree?

The planting period for jujube trees is divided into two types: autumn planting and spring planting. In all areas where there is no severe cold in winter and the average January temperature is not lower than -8°C, autumn planting can be carried out, that is, planting after the jujube tree sheds its leaves and before the soil freezes. In jujube-growing areas south of the Yangtze River in China, winters are relatively warm and soil moisture is good, so the wounds on the jujube tree roots can heal in the same year of planting, and some new roots will grow. In the following spring, they can grow in time. Therefore, autumn planting of jujube trees has a high survival rate and also results in good growth.

What medicine should be sprayed when a jujube tree gets bugs?

Common pests of jujube trees include the jujube weevil, jujube looper, Russian-olive psyllid, jujube gall midge, peach fruit borer, jujube leaf roller, jujube slug moth, tortoise wax scale, and green plant bug.

1. Jujube weevil

Control methods: (1) In late April, when adults begin to emerge from the soil and climb the tree, spray the trunk and the ground near the base of the trunk with pesticide; the key application area is within 1.5 m of trunk height, and it should be sprayed to the point of runoff; other long-residual contact insecticides can also be used in high-concentration solutions. Alternatively, within 60-90 cm around the base of the trunk, pesticide powder should be scattered, with the trunk base as the key application area; this is effective for poisoning and killing adults climbing the tree and saves labor. You can scatter 5% fenthion powder, 4% diazinon powder, 2.5% trichlorfon powder, etc., scattering 150-250 g of powder per mature tree; after scattering, rake lightly so the powder is not blown away by wind. After spraying or dusting, it is best to climb the tree once and shake down the adults already on the tree, which can improve control efficacy and reduce damage. If this measure is done well, the damage from this pest can basically be controlled.

(2) For chemical control on the tree during the adult damage period, spraying 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate or 50% fenthion emulsifiable concentrate, 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 1000-1500 times dilution all have relatively good results. To improve control efficacy, pesticide should also be sprayed on the ground surface near the base of the trunk and on the trunk. After spraying, shake the tree to make the adults fall to the ground; when they climb back onto the tree, they will contact more pesticide, improving control efficacy.

(3) In the early morning and evening, shake the tree to knock down and kill adults; plastic sheeting should be spread under the tree to facilitate collecting the adults.

(4) In combination with the control of the jujube looper, tie a plastic film band around the base of the trunk, compact the lower surrounding area with soil, and spray pesticide solution or scatter powder on the ground around the trunk; this is effective against both pest stages. (5) In combination with controlling underground pests, treat the soil with chemicals to poison and kill larvae with a certain effect; treatment in autumn is preferable. You can use 5% phoxim granules, 4% diazinon powder, 5% chlordane powder, etc., at 2-3.5 kg per mu.

2. Green plant bug

Control methods: (1) Before overwintering adults emerge from dormancy and become active in spring, clean up dead branches, fallen leaves, and weeds in the orchard, scrape the coarse bark from branches and trunks and plug tree holes, and combine this with leveling and preparing the land; centrally dispose of the cleared materials. This can eliminate some overwintering adults

(2) During the damage period of adults and nymphs, take advantage of their death-feigning behavior and manually shake the tree in the early morning and evening to capture and kill them. Especially before adults lay eggs, shaking them down to capture and kill them is more effective. At the same time, this can also control other pests with death-feigning behavior, such as weevils, leaf beetles, and scarab beetles.

(3) In combination with other management, remove egg masses and newly hatched clustered nymphs.

(4) After overwintering adults have finished emerging and during the peak hatching period of nymphs or the peak egg period, spraying the tree with pesticide has a very good control effect. The pesticides used include 2.5% deltamethrin emulsifiable concentrate or 2.5% lambda-cyhalothrin emulsifiable concentrate at 5000 times dilution, 2.5% Zaoqi emulsifiable concentrate at 2000 times dilution, 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution, etc., all of which have good control efficacy.

3. Jujube leaf roller

Control methods: (1) Around the Awakening of Insects solar term, scrape the bark and burn it to eliminate overwintering pupae.

(2) In autumn, tie straw rope or straw bundles around the base of main branches to attract the insects to pupate, then burn them in a concentrated manner.

(3) During the adult emergence period, use light traps, sugar-vinegar traps, and sex pheromone lures to trap and kill adults.

(4) During the larval occurrence period, spray with 25% Qiaomiao 1000 times or Tiannuo profenofos?phoxim or Tiannuo trichlorfon?phoxim 1500 times solution + Runzhou No. 6 3000 times solution + Lele Dou 200 times solution.

(5) Spray with Tiannuo Junchadi 600-800 times solution for control.

4. Tortoise wax scale

Control methods: (1) In winter, in combination with pruning, cut off infested branches and burn them in a concentrated manner.

(2) Protect natural enemies.

(3) Spray with Tiannuo profenofos?phoxim or Tiannuo trichlorfon?phoxim 1500 times solution + Runzhou No. 6 3000 times solution + Lele Dou 200 times solution, spraying once each in mid-July and late July.

5. Jujube slug moth

Control methods: (1) In autumn, turn over the surface soil around the trunk to attract the insects to gather and cocoon, then eliminate them.

(2) Protect natural enemies and make use of them.

(3) In winter, in combination with pruning, remove cocoons.

(4) Spray with Tiannuo profenofos?phoxim or Tiannuo trichlorfon?phoxim 1500 times solution + Runzhou No. 6 3000 times solution + Lele Dou 200 times solution.
