When does creeping fig fruit ripen
August to September.
The flowering period is April to May. Similar to the fig, the flowers are extremely small and hidden inside the fleshy sac-like receptacle of the inflorescence, divided into three types: gall flowers, male flowers and female flowers. Pollination is completed by a small insect through the gaps where the bracts of the fruit receptacle overlap in a staggered manner, and fruit size and yield are greatly related to pollination efficiency. After pollination it develops into an obovate compound fruit about 5 cm long, with bracts at the base, a nipple-like protrusion at the top of the fruit, and persistent sepals. The fruit ripens from August to September, and when fully ripe the pericarp of the sac fruit (exocarp) turns dark brown and splits open on its own into 3 parts, scattering the seeds outward. The seeds are white or pale.
Distribution of producing areas
Fujian, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Taiwan, China, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, southeastern Yunnan, Sichuan and Shaanxi.
Cultivation techniques
Site selection
For land preparation, it is best to choose gentle mountain slopes and well-drained flat land for planting; both sandy loam and clay loam are suitable soil types. In combination with winter ploughing, apply 3000 kg of farmyard manure per mu as base fertilizer, together with 30—40 kg of superphosphate. Break up the soil finely and level it, then make beds 1.2 m wide.
Propagation method
Propagate by seed. Sow in winter or spring. Winter sowing is done before the soil freezes, spring sowing after the thaw. Select seeds that are deep black in color and plump, and sow them in drills on the bed at a row spacing of 30 cm. Cover with 1 cm of soil, press down lightly, and water; seedlings generally emerge in about 15 days. Use 1 kg of seed per mu.
Field management
(1) Thinning and filling in seedlings. Production can be divided into 2 thinnings. The first is from late November to early December, when the seedlings are about 5 cm tall and have 4-6 true leaves, thinning to a plant spacing of 5-6 cm; by mid-February, when the seedlings have grown to 6-8 true leaves, final thinning is done to a plant spacing of 10-12 cm. If seedlings need to be filled in, they should be transplanted with soil and watered afterward.
(2) Topdressing. The growing period is relatively short, so the main approach is to apply enough base fertilizer; topdressing is mainly carried out in early April when the plants begin to form buds, with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers as the main types. Apply 30-40 kg of cake fertilizer per mu, and water immediately after application; a 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution can also be sprayed on the leaves, at intervals of about 10 days for 3-4 consecutive times, to promote plump fruit.
(3) Cultivation and weeding. Weeding should be done after the dew has dried on a sunny day, preferably before budding; weeding is not advisable in the later growth stage, so as not to damage the flower buds. Pay attention to drainage during the rainy season.
Pest and disease control
(1) Black spot disease. It first appears in April and damages the leaves. Control method: soak seeds in a 500-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl; in the early stage of the disease, spray with an 800-fold dilution of 40% carbendazim or a 1000-fold dilution of 20% thiophanate-methyl.
(2) Red spider mite. It occurs in May-June and damages the leaves. During occurrence, it can be controlled by spraying a 1000-fold dilution of 20% amitraz emulsifiable concentrate.
