Redbud, also called bare-branch tree, purple pearl, of the Fabaceae family and Cercis genus, is a deciduous tree or shrub. It is native to China. It likes light and has a certain degree of cold tolerance. So when does it sow and bloom? How much does a jin of seeds cost? How do you plant it? What are its places of origin? From the Suqian flower and tree base, it is learned that the seed price is around 36 yuan/jin, and the sowing rate per mu is around 12--15 jin.

When does redbud sow and bloom?

Sowing: redbud can be sown in spring, summer and autumn. Among them, the best sowing time for Canadian redbud seeds is from February to May and from September to November each year. Canadian redbud seeds sown at these two times have the highest germination rate and grow the best.

Blooming: the deep purple Bauhinia blakeana blooms from November to March each year. The pink, white or yellow Bauhinia variegata blooms from February to May.

How do you plant redbud?

1. Nursery site selection

Redbud adapts to many kinds of soil. Whether it is black soil, loess, sandy soil, or clay red soil, sowing redbud seeds is no problem. The nursery land for planting should have sufficient light, ample fertility, loose soil, high terrain, and easy drainage and watering. Mountain land, terraced fields, riverbanks, and plains are all acceptable.

2. Land preparation

1. Deep plowing: without fertility, the seedlings will be weak, withered and thin. So no matter what kind of field they are planted in, you must know how fertile these fields are. If farm manure has not been used for a long time and chemical fertilizer has been used all along, then the soil structure is certainly not good. For such land, improvements must be made. Before plowing, you can spread 6~8 tons of animal farm manure such as chicken manure, pig manure, cow manure, and horse manure per mu. Then deep plow and turn the soil 30 cm, and harrow it level and fine.

2. Making beds:

To make seedling-stage management easier, planting is not as simple as just scattering the seeds. The harrowed land should be made into beds 1.5 m wide, or 1.2 m wide. What is a bed? Don't you understand? Go search it on Baidu!

3. Sowing

Redbud seeds need to be sprouted. Although their own germination rate is already good, in order to improve the uniformity of emergence and further increase the germination rate, the necessary sprouting is an indispensable step. Soak the redbud seeds in clean water for one day, then remove them and they are ready for sowing. Redbud is generally sown in rows. In the same year it can grow more than 1 m tall, and this growth habit also determines the sowing spacing between plants and rows. The row spacing is 40 cm, the plant spacing is 20 cm, and about 12,000 plants are raised per mu. Sowing must not be too deep; burying the seeds 1~2 cm is enough. In spring, it is also necessary to cover with moisture-retaining rice straw or plastic film.

4. Seedling-stage management

Redbud trees grow fast. In about 60 days, the space in the seedling field becomes closed, and at this time weeds will no longer grow. But during this period, weeding must still be carried out more than twice. Because the seedlings are small, manual weeding is required, and herbicides cannot be used. If you want to cultivate single-trunk redbud, it can be transplanted in the second year. The trunk-setting height depends on the regional market demand; it is recommended to set the trunk at 1.8 m.

What are the places of origin of redbud?

Redbud likes fertile, well-drained soil and does not tolerate flooding. It has strong sprouting ability and tolerates pruning. The bark, fruit, wood and flowers can all be used as medicine, and its seeds are toxic. It is a symbol of family harmony and deep family affection. It is produced in southeastern China, north to Hebei, south to Guangdong and Guangxi, west to Yunnan and Sichuan, northwest to Shaanxi, and east to Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong and other provinces and regions. It is a common cultivated plant, mostly planted in courtyards, beside houses, and by temple streets, with a few growing in dense forests or limestone areas. The type specimen was collected from Beijing (cultivated plant).
