American ginseng, also known as Hua Qi Shen or Xi Yang Ren Shen, is widely cultivated for its effects of nourishing yin and tonifying qi, clearing heat and promoting fluid production, and reducing internal heat and relieving summer heat. It is now fairly common on the market and affordable in price. So where does American ginseng (Hua Qi Shen) come from? Which place produces the best? What is the difference from imported ginseng?

Places of origin of American ginseng

American ginseng, also called Hua Qi Shen, originated in the region from northern United States to southern Canada, mainly in Wisconsin. Imported American ginseng produced in Wisconsin, USA, has a long growth period and the highest content of the active ingredient ginsenosides, so its efficacy is the best, making it the finest among American ginseng. American ginseng has the dual effects of nourishing yin and tonifying qi, calming the mind and boosting intelligence, clearing heat and promoting fluid production, and reducing internal heat and relieving summer heat.

Regions that produce good quality:

Affected by climate and growing environment, American ginseng from the United States (true Hua Qi) has good taste, full aroma, and a mellow sweetness within its bitterness. In particular, American ginseng produced in Wisconsin, USA, has the highest content of the active ingredient ginsenosides, so its quality is the best and its price is the highest; the drawback is that the slices break easily. Imported American ginseng from Canada ranks second in efficacy, but its slices are attractive and neat. Domestic American ginseng has the largest output but differs considerably in efficacy from imported American ginseng. Therefore, it should be identified when purchasing. Imported American ginseng has good taste, full aroma, a mellow sweetness within its bitterness, and the best efficacy. Imported American ginseng can only be purchased from a few large brands such as Fulinmen American Ginseng and Tongrentang, among which Tongrentang is the most expensive.

Differences from imported ginseng:

1. Imported American ginseng is white in color, with fine and dense transverse wrinkles on the surface, light in weight, and low in powdery texture; the cross-section is relatively flat, slightly horny in appearance, with fine chrysanthemum-like veins; the qi is fragrant and strong, the taste is slightly sweet with bitterness, the mouthfeel is refreshing, and the flavor lingers in the mouth. Domestic ginseng, by contrast, has coarse and sparse transverse wrinkles on the surface, is heavy and hard, and has a high powdery texture; the cross-section is uneven, and the inner layer of the slices is mostly solid without chrysanthemum-heart veins, with no distinctive fragrance; when chewed, it is heavily bitter or bland, becoming bland and slightly astringent over time, and sticks to the tongue. Imported ginseng has a yellowish-earth surface, grayish-black fine and dense transverse wrinkles, and a yellow-white interior; it is light in weight with fine skin; the cross-section is flat, slightly horny, with fine chrysanthemum veins, a distinctive qi, fragrant and strong, bitter with sweetness, and a lasting mouthfeel.

2. Domestic ginseng roots have few transverse ring patterns at the root head, deep longitudinal wrinkles, a hard texture, an uneven cross-section, a solid interior, and no chrysanthemum veins; the qi is faint, the taste is heavily bitter with little sweetness, and after prolonged chewing it is astringent and slightly sticks to the tongue.

How to identify high-quality American ginseng:

1. Look at the color. High-quality American ginseng slices are pale yellow in color, high in density, smooth on the surface, and have clear veins (you may refer to Changhong American Ginseng slices); ordinary American ginseng slices are pale white in color, low in density, relatively rough on the surface, and have blurry veins.

2. Taste the flavor. High-quality American ginseng has a sweet taste within its bitterness, with an endless aftertaste, a strong ginseng fragrance, and a pure fragrant ginseng flavor; ordinary American ginseng slices have only bitterness, with little or no sweetness, and after prolonged chewing have a cotton-like texture.

3. High-quality American ginseng slices are processed with better techniques, and the slices are very thin, making it easy to fully steep out the medicinal effects; inferior slices are cut thicker, making it difficult to fully steep out the medicinal effects!

American ginseng is a commonly used medicinal herb for daily health care. Only by learning to distinguish good American ginseng from bad can you achieve a better health-preserving effect; however, the daily dosage of American ginseng slices must not exceed 5 grams (basically 5-6 slices).
