Is it good feng shui to grow a pomelo tree at home? Pruning time and subsidy benefits explained
The pomelo tree is also known as “wendan,” “luan,” and “pao.” Rutaceae. Evergreen tree. The fruit is eaten fresh or processed, and the peel can be made into candied fruit. Aromatic oil can be extracted from the flowers, leaves, and peel. So is it good feng shui to grow a pomelo tree at home? When should it be pruned? Is it profitable to grow? Are there subsidies? From grower Old Li, we learned that planting pomelo trees beside the house is very common in the south. Pomelo trees can be planted not only in orchards, but also in front of and behind the house, along roadsides, and in courtyards, and they have no direct effect on feng shui. In addition, many trees are unsuitable for planting in the courtyard, and there is a saying: do not plant elm on the left, do not plant peach on the right. Do not plant mulberry in front, do not plant willow behind, do not plant the “ghost clapper” (poplar) in the middle of the courtyard, and do not plant “turning-head flowers” in the courtyard. In traditional belief, mulberry trees and pines and cypresses cannot be planted in the courtyard (“sang” is homophonous with “sang” meaning mourning, and pines and cypresses are suitable for planting in front of graves).
When should a pomelo tree be pruned?
Pomelo trees are pruned once every two years, and there are roughly two time periods: any time from March to late July each year, and before or after the frost period.
Pruning methods:
1. Check all areas of the tree. First, look at the lower part of the trunk, where its branches arise, called the graft union and follow-up growth. New shoots growing at the union need to be cut off. Next, check the canopy for dead or pest-infested branches.
2. Use sharp shears to cut away new shoot growth from the graft union. Cut at a slant at the base of the shoot. Wear gloves, as these shoots can be thorny and tough. Cut away the lower branches of the shoots that grow downward or close together. As a general rule, cut off about 15% of the buds from the tree. Producing new, healthy growth is important because it is the vitality of the tree.
3. Use a pruning saw to cut off dead wood, stray branches, and crossing branches from the center of the tree. Cut away branches that are tangled together or touching. Make diagonal cuts at the base of the branch. Slanted cuts let moisture drain and prevent rot. Prune the center of the tree to create space and room. Open space prevents pests and fungi and allows more sunlight and air to reach the leaves.
4. Prune weak and thin branches from the top and sides of the pomelo tree to keep it pruned and the canopy minimal. Too much canopy can block sunlight from entering the core branches.
Is growing pomelo trees profitable? Are there subsidies?
1. Pomelos are mainly produced in southern regions of China such as Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Jiangxi, with varieties including Shatian pomelo and honey pomelo. Among them, Shatian pomelo, Wendan pomelo, Pingshan pomelo, and Siamese pomelo are the four famous pomelos of the world. In recent years, China's Shatian pomelo has been most famous for that from Rong County, and high-quality Shatian pomelo from Rong County has already sold elsewhere for more than 10 yuan per jin.
2. China has a very long history of cultivating pomelo trees. Pomelos like to grow in warm and humid places, have high medicinal value, are one of the fruits people enjoy eating, are also recognized by the medical field as the fruit with the greatest therapeutic food value, and are also used to make various dishes.
3. Pomelo tea and pomelo peel also have practical value and can be used as medicine. The traditional way of eating pomelo in China is to eat it directly as a fruit. Because China has a large population, per capita consumption of pomelo is less than one jin, leaving a relatively large gap. Moreover, with the rise and rapid development of various fruit processing industries, the pomelo processing industry has also been actively developed, including pomelo juice, pomelo concentrate, pomelo tea, and various aromatic agents made from pomelo peel. In addition, pomelo is also widely used in the beauty industry, which is also an important project in the development of the pomelo industry in recent years. The faster the pomelo industry develops, the greater the pressure on pomelo production and supply. Investing in pomelo cultivation is precisely a good opportunity to seize the development of the pomelo industry in line with the trend.
At present, there is no unified subsidy policy, but some regions have issued relevant policies. For example, Yongfeng County in Ji'an listed the Jinggang honey pomelo industry as one of its four characteristic industries, and the county government formulated reward and subsidy measures for the Jinggang honey pomelo industry: for contiguous plots of more than 100 mu, after passing inspection, a subsidy of 300 yuan per mu; for contiguous plots of more than 200 mu, after passing inspection, a subsidy of 400 yuan per mu; for contiguous plots of more than 300 mu, after passing inspection, a subsidy of 500 yuan per mu. For detailed information, you still need to consult the local government department.
