Pothos, also known as devil's ivy, golden pothos, golden vine and mulberry leaf, is a relatively common landscaping plant in China. It is widely planted because of its air-purifying effect. At present, many people who build new homes like to place it indoors to remove odors. So what is the reason for pothos leaves turning yellow and roots rotting? How should it be solved?

Causes of yellow leaves and root rot:

During the growth of pothos, yellowing leaves or root rot often occur; the cause is mostly improper cultivation and management. Too much or too little water, too strong or too weak sunlight, and too much or too little fertilizer can all cause leaves to turn yellow, but the yellowing conditions differ. The causes should be carefully observed and analyzed, and then corrected.

Solutions:

When caring for pothos, be sure to pay attention to watering. Especially for soil-grown pothos, once water accumulates in the soil, root rot and yellow leaves are likely. It is best to choose flower pots with more drainage holes, and the soil should be as loose, fertile and well-draining as possible, so as to avoid water accumulation and root rot.

After the temperature drops in winter, be sure to water less, and the care temperature should also be kept above 10 degrees Celsius, so as to avoid freezing it. Moreover, the weather is relatively cold now, so try not to water directly with tap water; it is best to water with warm water.

Apply less fertilizer in winter

Pothos does not have a very high demand for fertilizer. If the home is relatively warm, a little fertilizer can be given appropriately. In winter, try not to fertilize. After the temperature rises in spring, liquid fertilizer can be applied 1 to 2 times a month, which can promote the growth of pothos.

Placement location

In winter, pothos is best cared for indoors, but it should be kept away from some heating equipment. Moreover, the air in winter is relatively dry, so water should be sprayed in time to avoid the air being too dry, which will make the leaves turn yellow.

The location for caring for pothos can be appropriately shaded, otherwise the leaves of pothos will grow very thin and weak. It can be given some scattered light every day, which can make the leaves grow emerald green and glossy.

Handle in time

If you find that the pothos you are growing has yellow leaves or has become black and rotting, be sure to cut off these leaves in time first. The scissors should be disinfected in advance, and then check whether the root system of the pothos shows signs of rot. If some roots have rotted, they should also be cleaned up in time.

If the pothos is grown in soil, some of the soil around it should also be removed to avoid secondary infection. It is best to spray some fungicide as well, to be safer. Spray once a week, and spraying 4 times is enough.

Suitable growth temperature

Pothos likes a warm and humid environment, and the best temperature for caring for it is around 20 degrees Celsius. In winter, the temperature should be kept above 5 degrees Celsius as much as possible, so that it can overwinter safely.

Precautions

Once the leaves of pothos turn yellow, they must be removed in time, and rotted roots must also be cleaned up in time. Some carbendazim can be sprayed, which will help somewhat. After discovering rotted roots, do not have any wishful thinking. If they are not handled in time, the whole plant will die.
