How do you plant iris?
There are two methods of propagation: division and sowing. Nurseries commonly use the division method, which is simple and convenient, produces large quantities, and has low cost. May, June, July and August are all suitable for division. Choose 3-year-old plants, dig them up and break them apart one by one, then plant the divided seedlings in rows in the field. That is the whole process of division, which is actually very simple and easy to understand. Propagation by sowing is even simpler, and can be done in either spring or autumn. First soak the seeds in warm water for 20 hours so they fully absorb water and germinate, then take the seeds out to dry and evenly scatter them on the seedbed, cover with a layer of fine soil about 1 cm thick, and spray water to keep it moist.
Iris likes fertilizer and water, requires sufficient light, and also tolerates semi-shade. It has low soil requirements, and can grow well in loess, sandy soil and clay. It is extremely cold-tolerant, and has been introduced and planted in all regions nationwide. In the cold regions of Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Northeast China it can overwinter naturally, growing and flowering well. In East China, South China and Southwest China it grows even more vigorously and full of life. For nursery propagation, the planting density per mu should be controlled between 8,000 and 11,000 plants, sold after 3 to 4 years of growth, and it can also be planted in containers.
For fertilizing, only farmyard manure is needed, and a small amount of compound fertilizer can be used during the growing period. Water should be supplied abundantly. If there are weeds, they need to be pulled by hand. Do not use any herbicide. Iris is very sensitive to herbicides, and even a slight touch will immediately cause yellowing and leaf loss, though it will not kill the seedlings.
