When is celery planted and harvested?
1. Autumn open-field cultivation
The suitable sowing period is from early June to early July; shade-covered seedling raising is required, the seedling age is 70-80 days, the commercial maturity period is from late November to early December, and harvesting should be completed before frost.
2. Winter-spring greenhouse cultivation
The suitable sowing period is September to November; sowing after October requires protected seedling raising, the seedling age is 80 days, and harvesting and marketing take place from February to April the following year. When the temperature is below minus 5°C, a small arched shed should be added inside the greenhouse for insulation.
3. Spring open-field cultivation
The suitable sowing period is from late October to January of the following year; use plastic greenhouses for sowing and seedling raising, the seedling age is 70-90 days, open-field planting is done in February to March, and harvesting and marketing take place in May to June. In the early stage of cultivation, small sheds should be used for insulation, and varieties that bolt late should be selected.
4. Summer high-mountain cultivation
When daytime temperatures in plain areas reach 30-35°C in summer, on mountains at an altitude of 800-1000 m the temperature is only 23-28°C, which is just right for celery growth. The specific method is: seedlings can first be raised at the foot of the mountain in April to May; when the seedlings have 4-5 true leaves, they can be planted in batches on the mountain at an altitude of about 800-1000 m from mid-June to early July, choosing fields with deep soil and irrigation and drainage conditions for planting; field management is the same as autumn open-field cultivation management in plain areas, and the product is generally marketed during the off-season from August to September.
How is celery grown?
1. Sowing. Choose a field with convenient irrigation and drainage and loose, fertile soil as the seedbed, and prepare nutrient soil before sowing. Celery seeds are very small, so before sowing the seedbed must be leveled and finely prepared and thoroughly watered; when sowing, mix the seeds evenly with fine soil and scatter them so that sowing is uniform; after sowing, cover thinly with fine soil and sprinkle the covering soil wet.
2. Seedling separation. When the seedlings have 3 or 4 true leaves, they can be separated and temporarily planted. When separating seedlings, the seedlings should be transplanted separately by size for easier management. The planting spacing for separated seedlings is generally 6-8 cm; the area of the separation bed is about 3-4 times that of the sowing bed.
3. Fertilization. Celery likes fertilizer and tolerates fertilizer, and has relatively high requirements for fertilizer and water conditions; sufficient base fertilizer is required, and the amount of base fertilizer should account for about 80% of the total fertilization amount. Generally, apply 4000-6000 kg of decomposed barnyard manure, 30-50 kg of superphosphate, and 25 kg of leaf vegetable special compound fertilizer containing manganese and boron per sq m.
4. Celery has relatively weak cold tolerance; when the temperature is low, large and small greenhouse films are needed for insulation. Generally, when the temperature drops to 2-3°C, the greenhouse should be covered with film; at minus 5°C, a small arched shed should be placed inside the greenhouse for insulation; when the temperature continues below minus 7°C, straw curtains or straw bags should also be added to the small arched shed to enhance the insulation effect.
5. Celery has large plant and row spacing, and its early growth is relatively slow, so it is very prone to weed damage. To reduce weeding labor, herbicides can be used for control, and after the plants close the rows, manual weeding is mainly used.
