Where Does Bougainvillea Grow? Flowering Period, Flower Promotion and Hydroponic Methods for This Vine-like Shrub
Bougainvillea, also known as three-leaf flower, Mao Baojin, Rhododendron, and triangle flower, is a common vine-like shrub in southern China. Because of its long flowering period and diverse colors, it is widely cultivated in gardens, indoors, parks and other places. So where does bougainvillea grow? When does it bloom? How should it be grown so that it blooms? Can it be grown hydroponically? How is it grown hydroponically?
Where does it grow?
Bougainvillea has many varieties and rich colors, including red, orange, yellow, white, purple and other color series. Bougainvillea is native to Brazil, and it is cultivated in various parts of China. It is also the city flower of Zhuhai City, Shenzhen City, Xiamen City, Sanya City, Jiangmen City and Liuzhou City, the provincial flower of Hainan Province, and the national flower of the Republic of Zambia.
Flowering time:
Bougainvillea has a very long flowering period. If there are 10 to 12 hours of sunlight per day, with strong light and good ventilation, the flowering period of bougainvillea can reach 90 to 120 days. Generally speaking, bougainvillea blooms around April and November, with differences depending on variety and region.
Which months are the flowering period?
The flowering period of bougainvillea is generally between November and December. If managed properly, it can bloom continuously throughout the year. However, some varieties have different flowering times, and some bougainvillea grown in greenhouses also have different flowering times.
Growing tips:
1. Care environment: Bougainvillea is a flowering plant that greatly loves light and needs to be placed in an environment where it can receive light for a long time. If it does not get light or the sunshine duration is short, it will affect flowering, and in serious cases it may not bloom at all.
2. Watering: Bougainvillea needs sufficient water during the flowering period. Usually it does not need too much water; water again when the flower soil is dry, and water thoroughly when watering.
3. Fertilizing: Bougainvillea has a relatively strong demand for fertilizer. Apply thin fertilizer frequently, mainly phosphorus fertilizer. Note that fertilizer cannot be applied while it is flowering, and a single application of strong fertilizer can be given after flowering.
4. Soil: Bougainvillea does not have high soil requirements. The main thing is loose, breathable, well-drained nutrient soil, because bougainvillea fears waterlogging, so the drainage of the flower soil is very important.
5. Temperature: Bougainvillea likes a warm environment and greatly fears cold. It is suitable for growing between 15~30°C. If frozen, it will cause leaves to drop, so attention should be paid to temperature in summer and winter, and the winter temperature should not be lower than 10 degrees.
6. Pruning: Bougainvillea grows rapidly, so it is not afraid of pruning. Reasonable pruning can make bougainvillea grow better. It is generally divided into post-flowering pruning and early-winter pruning. Post-flowering pruning can adjust the plant shape and promote earlier flowering, so the remaining flowers should be cut off in time, and then the branches and leaves should be pruned.
When it enters the dormant period, bougainvillea can be pruned more heavily, which can reduce the overall size and prevent frost damage. All the new branches of the year should be cut off from the old branches.
Hydroponic growing methods:
1. Pure hydroponic bougainvillea
Some flower lovers hope to move away from soil cultivation and grow bougainvillea hydroponically like other plants. In theory, this method is feasible, but in practice, so far no flower lover has been seen successfully growing bougainvillea hydroponically. Bougainvillea is different from other plants. Bougainvillea plants are very tall and are not suitable for hydroponics. Moreover, even for small plants, because the flowering performance is low, the value of hydroponics is not great. Even with hydroponics, only branches like the one in the picture above can be selected, and growth is slow, making it difficult to wait for flowering, so the value of hydroponics is not great.
2. Hydroponic bougainvillea for flower viewing
Many flower lovers have dim indoor light and insufficient sunlight, making it difficult to keep bougainvillea alive, and even if kept alive, it is difficult to make it bloom. Therefore, many flower lovers choose to grow branches hydroponically when bougainvillea is blooming, for viewing. This method is feasible.
However, hydroponic flowering bougainvillea requires attention: regularly add nutrient solution to the water, ensure sufficient sunlight, and replenish water in time, which can appropriately extend the flowering period.
3. Hydroponic bougainvillea rooting
Hydroponic rooting is the simplest method of propagating bougainvillea. Simply insert the branches into water; no rooting agent is needed, and roots can form in about 30 days. After rooting, transfer to soil cultivation, and the survival rate is high.
