How much is pine resin (a traditional Chinese medicine) per jin? Main producing areas and optimal harvest period explained
Pine resin, a traditional Chinese medicine name. It is the oleoresin in the wood of Pinaceae plants masson pine, Chinese pine, or plants of the same genus. So how much is pine resin per jin? Where are the main producing areas?
According to the latest prices on Alibaba, the current price of pine resin as a traditional Chinese medicine is around 10-20 yuan per jin.
Main producing areas of pine resin
Masson pine is distributed in Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, China, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places. Chinese pine is distributed in Northeast China, North China, Northwest China, and Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu and other places. Japanese red pine is distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu. It is cultivated in the Nanjing area. Japanese black pine is distributed in Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu and other places; it is mostly cultivated in Wuhan, Nanjing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and other places. It has the effects of dispelling wind and killing parasites. It is often used for scabies and ringworm of the skin.
When is the best time to harvest pine resin
“Gangmu Shiyi”: “Method for extracting the oil: cut old oily pine wood into pieces two or three cun long, split them to the thickness of a lamp wick, tie them into a bundle with hemp thread, about the size of a teacup mouth, then take a water basin, fill it half full with water, place a bowl inside the water basin, cover the bowl with a piece of matting, cut a hole in the middle as large as a coin, then place the tied pine bundle upright in the middle of the hole in the matting, light it with fire, and after a short time cover it tightly all around and above and below with stove ash, do not let smoke escape; if smoke escapes, the oil will be lost; wait and keep it warm for one or two hours, and the oil will all drip into the bowl; remove the ash and matting, take it out for use.”
Resin collection methods include the upward method (i.e. V-shaped method), the downward method (i.e. Y-shaped method), and chemical treatment methods. China currently mainly uses the downward resin collection method. Select a pine tree with a diameter of 20-50 cm and cut an opening on the trunk at a height of 2 m from the ground. Before cutting the opening, first scrape off the coarse bark, but do not damage the xylem; the scraped surface should be 50-60 cm long and 25-40 cm wide; in the center of the scraped surface, cut a central groove 35-50 cm long, 1-1.3 cm wide, and 1-1.2 cm deep into the xylem, install a resin receiver at the base of the central groove, then cut another pair of side grooves from the central groove, so that the oleoresin can be continuously collected. Harvesting at 30-35°C is suitable, that is, from May to October south of the Yangtze River, and from June to September in North China and Northeast China.
