Appendix: Banana pest and disease control techniques

The main pests and diseases of banana are the “three diseases” and the “three insects.”

1. Banana bunchy top disease: commonly known as “banana male” (jiaogong), it is a viral disease. Infected plants generally cannot produce a bunch, and it is mainly spread through seedlings and banana aphids. Control methods:

(1) Suckers are easily diseased, so it is not advisable to introduce seedlings from diseased areas; promote the planting of test-tube plantlets;

(2) Eliminate the transmission vector: 2000-fold diluted Yajijing solution (or 10 grams of Yashijing) + 15 mL of Jundu Shaxing (or Virus K) + 25 grams of plant physiological balance agent + one vial of Yunda 120 + 15 kg of water, sprayed once every 5-7 days for 2-3 consecutive times; at the same time, irrigate the roots of diseased plants with 600-fold diluted plant physiological balance agent twice (once every 5 days). This kills aphids and controls the virus.

(3) When diseased plants are found, dig them out two days after killing the aphids, and spread lime into the diseased holes.

2. Mosaic heart rot: this disease is a viral disease. After it occurs, the leaf sheaths can be seen collapsing and rotting, and the central leaf dies. The control methods are the same as for bunchy top disease.

3. Leaf spot disease: July to October is a high-temperature and high-humidity climate, and this disease is very likely to occur. Control methods:

(1) Strengthen cultivation management to improve the disease resistance of plants;

(2) Keep the banana plantation clean, cut off diseased leaves and burn them;

(3) Spray once every 2 months: ① 20 mL of Huishuangling + 25 grams of plant physiological balance agent + 10 mL of Jiamu Fengshou + one vial of Yunda 120 + 15 kg of water; ② 10 mL of 25% Tilt emulsifiable concentrate + 1 vial of Yemianlong + 25 grams of plant physiological balance agent + 15 kg of water, or use chlorothalonil or ridomil for control.

4. Three major pest categories. The three major pest categories harming banana are: underground pests (commonly known as jimuchong, cutworms), weevils and leaf-rolling caterpillars. Control methods:

(1) Before planting, apply 20-25 grams of 5% Xianchongling granules per hole;

(2) Frequently keep the banana plantation clean, peel off rotting leaf sheaths, and reduce places where adult and larval insects shelter;

(3) Chemical control: commonly used insecticides include 12 mL of Qinglingling + 6 grams of Liling + 15 kg of water, as well as Shengfeng insecticide, Shibaogong and others.
