When do you plant and harvest kohlrabi?

Planting:

1. Kohlrabi planting time: open-field cultivation can be carried out in both spring and autumn, generally mainly in autumn. Sowing can be done successively from late July to October, and harvesting ends from mid-September to March of the following year, but the yield is highest when sown in August.

2. If sown too early, the weather is hot and dry with a lot of heavy rain, making it difficult for seedlings to emerge, so shade netting should be used for coverage. If sown too late, the seedlings may suffer cold damage when they have 2 to 3 true leaves and encounter a cold wave. Spring sowing requires cultivation in a solar greenhouse or plastic tunnel.

3. Sowing period: spring cultivation in late February, summer cultivation from early July to late August. Autumn cultivation is from early September to early October, generally mainly autumn cultivation.

Harvesting:

Harvest at 4°C; root tubers harvested when it is too cold are not suitable for storage. Generally, choose a sunny day, dig out the root tubers, cut off the tops and remove the leaves; air-dry the surface moisture, remove the attached soil, and store in a cellar. The cellar temperature should preferably be 0 to 1°C. The leaves are braided into plaits and hung up to air-dry. When storing the whole plant dry, dig out the root tubers with the leaves, air-dry the surface moisture, remove the attached soil, cut into four parts, tie together with the leaves into small bundles of 2 to 3 kg, and hang on wooden racks to air-dry. For selecting and retaining seed roots, the requirements are a complete root body, no pests, diseases or wounds, smooth skin, and those with the variety's characteristics can all be selected. Store separately in a cellar, check frequently, prevent cold damage, prevent mildew and rot, and prevent premature sprouting.

How do you grow kohlrabi?

1. Variety selection: mainly the common variety and the giant Malong variety. The common variety of kohlrabi has a slightly smaller root ball, fine and tender flesh, less fiber, is fragrant and crisp, and has good quality. The Malong variety has small, deep green leaves and an extra-large root ball, with a yield as high as more than 5,000 kg per mu.

2. Suitable sowing time: in this region, sow between late July and late August, either by direct seeding or transplanting.

3. Reasonable close planting: for direct seeding, leave about 25,000 common variety plants per mu; for transplanting, density is 25cm×15cm, planting about 20,000 plants per mu; for the Malong variety, transplanting density is 45cm×50cm, planting about 3,000 plants per mu.

4. Fertilizer and water management: after kohlrabi is transplanted and established, it needs to be watered immediately with a rooting fertilizer. During the growth and development period of kohlrabi, apply thin high-quality organic fertilizer and complete nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer frequently. Generally apply once every 15-20 days, for 3 to 5 consecutive applications, using 5-10 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer per mu each time, combined with thin human manure and urine applied with water. During the rapid underground root expansion period, apply 3-5 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate per mu, and spray once every 7 to 10 days with an 800-fold special vegetable-type Gaomeishi organic humic acid active liquid fertilizer or a 500-fold plant vitality essence, 5000-fold Huangjia natural brassin mixed liquid, etc., for 3 to 5 consecutive sprays; and ensure sufficient and uniform water supply, and absolutely avoid alternating too much and too little, which causes the soil to crack.

5. Pest and disease control: during the seedling stage, pay attention to controlling aphids and viral diseases, and foliar spray 1 to 2 times with a 2500-fold aphid-whitefly net and 800-fold virus A mixed liquid for control. During the expansion period, pay attention to controlling vegetable yellow mites, root rot, etc., and foliar spray with a 1500-fold Nongdile and 2500-fold hymexazol mixed liquid for control.
