Which herbicides and effective formulas can be used to control the noxious weed reed in corn fields
Reed is one of the main plants growing in wetland environments. Its strong vitality and rapid reproductive capacity severely affect the growth of farmland crops, making it a noxious weed that is difficult to control. So which herbicide is used to control reed? What herbicide is used for reed in corn fields?
Reed is a perennial grass family plant, aquatic or hygrophytic (like barnyardgrass, it can grow both in water (paddy) fields and in dry fields). Its rhizomes are very well developed. The culms are erect, 1-3 m tall, 1-4 cm in diameter, with more than 20 nodes; the internodes at the base and upper part are shorter, while those at the lower part are longer. It is a highly polyploid and aneuploid plant. Reed grows on riverbanks, lakes and marshes, along the banks of ponds and ditches, and in low wetlands, and is a widely distributed polymorphic species worldwide. Except in forest habitats, where it does not grow, it can form continuous reed communities in all kinds of open areas with water sources.
Reed is widely distributed in China, among which the Liaohe Delta, Songnen Plain, and Sanjiang Plain in the Northeast, the Hulunbuir and Xilin Gol grasslands in Inner Mongolia, the Bosten Lake, Ili River Valley, and Tacheng Emin River Valley in Xinjiang, and Baiyangdian in the North China Plain are reed areas where large areas of reed are concentrated.
Why is reed difficult to control?
1. False death
After the leaves are exposed to the herbicide, substances secreted within the stem cause the leaves to fall off, and the herbicide can hardly be conducted through the vascular system to the roots of the reed; after the stem briefly turns yellow, new branches and leaves grow from the axillary buds.
2. Epidermal barrier
The waxy epidermis has water-proof and seepage-proof functions. The herbicide simply cannot penetrate through the epidermis into the vascular bundles, so the application is ineffective.
3. Well-developed root system
The rhizomes grow in three directions: obliquely upward, obliquely downward, and horizontally, forming the reed's strong reproductive capacity.
However, in recent years, reed infestation in farmland in low-lying areas of northern China has become increasingly severe, especially in fields near irrigation ditches, low wetlands, newly reclaimed fields, and dry fields. Reed has horizontally creeping rhizomes and reproduces by rhizomes, which crisscross to form a network.
The rhizomes have very strong vitality and can remain buried underground for a long time. Once conditions are suitable, rhizomes 1 m or even more than 1 m long can still develop into new shoots. It can also reproduce by seeds, and the seeds can spread with the wind.
Reed control methods
During the crop growing period, for a small amount of reed in the field, selectively apply an appropriate concentration of glyphosate plus MCPA, haloxyfop, or quizalofop-p-ethyl and other systemic herbicides by smearing it on reed leaves, or break the reed by hand and use a syringe to drip the herbicide solution into the reed core; this can effectively kill the reed down to the roots and prevent it from spreading in the field. When applying the herbicide, be careful not to let rice and wheat plants come into contact with the herbicide, otherwise phytotoxicity will occur.
As a method of controlling reed, you can first cut the reed in half with scissors, then apply glyphosate to the cut surface (glyphosate can be diluted or not diluted; generally, not diluting gives a better effect). Under the action of the herbicide, the reed will die down to the roots. This method can still be used for small areas. For clearing large areas of reed, the following method can be used:
A: Herbicide solution preparation: Add glyphosate or 10.8% haloxyfop-P-methyl and the pesticide synergist organosilicon to clean water (deep well water without salinity or alkalinity) in a bucket, stir thoroughly, and after dissolving, pour it into the sprayer for a second round of stirring and dilution.
B: Spraying time: On sunny days without dew, from 7-12 in the morning and from 6-11 in the afternoon.
C: Spraying method: Manual directed spraying gives the best effect when reed has 3-5 leaves. Aim at reed and other grass weeds and spray evenly, wetting and soaking them thoroughly, with a water volume of 30 kg per mu. A tractor-mounted large tank can also be used for spraying at slow speed, with a water volume of 50 kg per mu.
What herbicide can effectively kill reed in corn fields?
1. Ordinary control method: After corn emergence, spray mesotrione + nicosulfuron + atrazine for control (note: do not use on waxy corn). In concentrated contiguous areas, reed roots can also be dug out manually.
2. Eradication method: A stock solution can be prepared by diluting 10% glyphosate 1:1 with water. After cutting the reed, inject 5 mL into each hollow internode of the reed stem. On the 2nd day after injection, the leaves turn yellow; after about two weeks, all aboveground stems wither. If scattered reed appears the following year, use the above method again.
