Potato, also called “tudou”, “shanyao dan”, “yang shanyu”, is one of people's daily favorite foods. But because it contains solanine, it can cause poisoning. So what are the symptoms of potato poisoning? How to detoxify? How to rescue sheep that have eaten it and been poisoned?

What are the symptoms of potato poisoning? How to detoxify?

Poisoning caused by potato will cause itching in the throat, a burning and painful sensation in the chest, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and so on.

Emergency treatment for potato poisoning:

1. After poisoning, immediately use strong tea or 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution to induce vomiting and wash the stomach.

2. For mild poisoning, drink more sugar-salt water to replenish fluids, and appropriately drink vinegar water to neutralize solanine.

3. For severe vomiting and abdominal pain, atropine 0.3-0.5 mg may be given by intramuscular injection.

4. For severe cases, promptly send the patient to the hospital for emergency treatment.

How to rescue sheep poisoned by potato?

In rural areas, after sheep flocks eat sprouted or rotten potatoes, it is very easy for some of the sheep to develop potato poisoning.

1. When sheep develop potato poisoning, it mainly causes disorders in the functions of the nervous system and digestive system of the poisoned sheep, but the clinical symptoms of poisoning in sheep often vary greatly because the degree of potato poisoning in sheep differs. Generally, sheep with mild poisoning mostly show a course of chronic poisoning. The poisoned sheep will show obvious symptoms of gastroenteritis. At the beginning of the disease, the poisoned sheep have reduced appetite, weak rumen motility, and complete cessation of rumination, accompanied by symptoms such as swelling of the oral mucosa, drooling, vomiting, and constipation; when the gastroenteritis of the poisoned sheep becomes acute, the poisoned sheep will develop severe diarrhea, and the feces of the affected sheep will be mixed with blood. The poisoned sheep appear depressed, with muscle relaxation, extreme weakness, and the body temperature sometimes rises, and skin rashes occur on the anus, tail root, inner sides of the limbs, and udder, and vesicular dermatitis occurs around the corners of the mouth, recurring repeatedly, seriously affecting the fattening effect of the sheep flock in winter and spring. When sheep show severe poisoning, the poisoned sheep will show obvious neurological symptoms. At the beginning of the disease, the poisoned sheep appear excited and restless, with a violent temperament, sometimes rushing forward wildly and colliding, after which they turn to depression, with weakness and lack of strength in the hindquarters, and develop movement disorders, with a staggering gait from side to side, cyanosis of visible mucous membranes, weak breathing, heart weakness, dilated pupils, and general convulsions. Generally, death occurs within 1-2 days.

2. Once sheep farmers discover that some sheep in the flock have symptoms of potato poisoning, they should immediately stop feeding the flock sprouted or rotten potatoes, and adopt corresponding combined traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment measures for the sick sheep:

3. For generally mildly poisoned sick sheep, 25% potassium permanganate solution or 5% tannic acid solution 1000 ml can be used to wash the stomach or give an enema to the sick sheep, so as to remove toxic substances in the gastrointestinal tract of the sick sheep and stop the absorption and spread of toxic substances. For the areas where skin rashes and vesicular dermatitis occur in sick sheep due to potato poisoning, treatment should first cut off the hair at the affected area, remove dirt, and wash with 20% tannic acid solution or 30% boric acid solution, then apply 30% gentian violet or 30% silver nitrate solution, so as to achieve antiseptic, astringent, and exudation-stopping effects on the affected area.

4. For sick sheep with severe poisoning and relatively severe poisoning symptoms, the traditional Chinese medicine Sanhuang Jiedu Tang can be given orally to the sick sheep to promote detoxification and elimination of toxins. The formula composition of Sanhuang Jiedu Tang is: Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, and Scutellaria baicalensis 30 grams each, Anemarrhena asphodeloides, Forsythia suspensa, Gardenia jasminoides, dandelion, Gentiana scabra, Isatis indigotica root, Rehmannia glutinosa, Artemisia capillaris, Pharbitis nil seed, Akebia quinata, Alisma orientale, and Poria cocos 25 grams each, talc and hemp seed 100 grams each, licorice 15 grams, decoct in water and take the juice, and after it cools, give it orally to the sick sheep once, once in the morning and once in the evening each day; alternatively, 250 ml rapeseed oil and 250 ml honey may be mixed and given orally to the sick sheep once, and it may also be combined with 300 grams mung beans and 30 grams licorice, mixed and decocted in water and given orally to the sick sheep once. It should also be combined with 10% glucose injection 2000 ml, 10% sodium benzoate caffeine injection 20 ml, vitamin C injection 20 ml, and magnesium sulfate injection 100 ml, mixed and injected intravenously into the sick sheep once, once in the morning and once in the evening each day, to improve the blood circulation of the sick sheep and thereby accelerate the detoxification function. Poisoned sick sheep should have feeding and conditioning strengthened. For sick sheep that have already developed skin rashes and vesicular dermatitis, treatment of the ruptured areas on the body surface should be strengthened, and warmth preservation of the ruptured areas should be done well to prevent frostbite at the ruptured areas and secondary bacterial infection, so as to avoid delaying the treatment effect for the sick sheep.
