Boiled Sweet Corn: Calories, Whether It Is Genetically Modified, Delicious Recipes and Cultivation Techniques
Sweet corn is a type of corn, also known as vegetable corn. Super sweet corn is widely grown because of its high sugar content and long suitable harvest period.So how many calories are there roughly in one boiled ear of sweet corn? Is it genetically modified? How do you make it delicious? What are the cultivation techniques?In fact, one ear of waxy corn has 142 calories, and if you want to completely burn off this amount of calories after eating it, you would have to run more than 2.3 km. Even so, its calories are still low compared with other staple foods, and when you also take into account the benefits of corn for the human body, eating more corn is excellent.
Is sweet corn genetically modified?
1. Sweet corn is not a new crop that has only recently appeared. Although its true time of origin cannot be traced, the earliest sweet corn variety recorded in documents is the corn collected by European colonists in 1779 from the Iroquois people of the Americas, and on this basis it can be affirmed that sweet corn appeared even earlier. You should know that at that time there was no such thing as genetic modification at all.
2. Although today's sweet corn varieties are not completely identical to those of several hundred years ago, they are likewise not the product of genetic modification, but rather new sweet corn varieties bred on the basis of naturally mutated sweet corn varieties through traditional breeding techniques——the methods of selecting and breeding inbred lines and combining hybrids.
How do you make sweet corn delicious?
Stir-fried Sweet Corn with King Oyster Mushroom
Main ingredients: 1 king oyster mushroom, 100 g sweet corn
Supplementary ingredients: 1 hot green pepper, 1/3 carrot
Seasonings: 1.5 tbsp peanut oil, 1 spoon salt, 5 g garlic, 1 spoon light soy sauce, 1/2 spoon dark soy sauce
1. Wash the king oyster mushroom and dice it, wash the hot green pepper and carrot and dice them, peel the garlic and slice it, and thaw the sweet corn for later use;
2. Put an appropriate amount of peanut oil into the wok, add the garlic cloves and fry until fragrant. After smelling the garlic aroma, add the diced carrot and stir-fry evenly, then add the shelled corn kernels and stir-fry for half a minute;
3. Add the diced king oyster mushroom, add one spoon of salt and stir-fry until the king oyster mushroom softens. Add the diced hot green pepper, continue stir-frying until the hot green pepper is just cooked, then add 1 spoon of light soy sauce and half a spoon of dark soy sauce for seasoning, stir-fry over high heat until evenly mixed and serve.
Braised Pork Shank Bone with Sweet Corn
Main ingredients: 500 g pork ribs, 2 ears sweet corn
Supplementary ingredients: 1 red hot pepper
Seasonings: appropriate amount salad oil, appropriate amount salt, appropriate amount cooking wine, a little light soy sauce, a little dark soy sauce, a little starch, a little white sugar, appropriate amount white pepper, 4 scallions
1. Wash the pork shank bone under running water, drain the water and put it into a large bowl, add light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, cooking wine, a little white sugar, crushed pepper and a little dry starch, mix well, and marinate for about 40 minutes for later use; heat oil in a frying pan, arrange the marinated pork shank bones in the pan and fry both sides until fragrant and golden brown, then remove from the pan and drain the oil for later use;
2. Peel and wash the corn, chop it into sections, and using the base oil in the pan, place the corn sections kernel-side down into the pan and fry until slightly yellow and fragrant; pour the pork shank bones into the pan, slice the ginger and add it to the pan as well, add 1 small spoon of cooking wine, light soy sauce and dark soy sauce to the pan, stir-fry evenly, and pour boiling water into the pan;
3. Add water until it just covers the surface of the ingredients, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low heat, cover and simmer; when the pork bones are tender, soft and fully flavored (about 40 minutes), turn to high heat to thicken the sauce, taste it and add salt as needed, and before removing from the heat pour the scallion sections and red hot pepper rings into the pan, toss a few times, then remove from the heat and plate.
What are the cultivation techniques for sweet corn?
1. Choose high-quality varieties. Sweet corn varieties are divided into three major types: ordinary sweet corn, super sweet corn and enhanced sweet corn, and the appropriate variety type should be chosen according to the production purpose. If the main aim is to market young ears as fruit and vegetables, super sweet corn varieties should be selected, and early-, mid- and late-maturing varieties should also be chosen for combined planting so that they reach the market in succession, thereby increasing economic returns.
2. Seed treatment. This includes seed selection, seed soaking and seed sprouting. Because sweet corn has a high sugar content, the seeds are easily eaten and damaged by underground pests in the soil, causing gaps in the stand. Therefore, it is best to sow after sprouting. The main steps are to carefully select plump and robust seeds, first soak them in clean water for 24 hours, then soak them in a 500-fold solution of 50% carbendazim or 75% thiophanate-methyl for 2—3 hours, take them out, rinse them clean, drain them and sprout them. The sprouting process is to place the seeds in a container lined with dry linen, spray an appropriate amount of hot water at 40—50℃ on the surface of the seeds, cover with a wet cloth, and at a temperature of 25—28℃ the sprouts will be fully out after 24 hours. If the outside temperature is low, warming measures should be taken to promote seed germination. It is best for the sprouts to just show white, and they should not be too long.
3. Sow at the right time. Sow when the soil temperature is stable at 10-12℃, with a row spacing of 50-60 cm; the plant spacing varies with the variety and cultivation level, using 25-30 cm, planting 3500-4000 plants per mu, and about 4000 plants per mu for compact varieties. Generally, drilling in furrows or hole sowing is used, with a sowing depth of 5-6 cm, sowing 2-3 seeds per spot (hole).
4. Scientific fertilization. Because the harvest period of sweet corn is earlier than that of ordinary corn, it is essential to apply sufficient base fertilizer and to use a reasonable fertilizer ratio. On the basis of applying 2000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per mu, it is recommended to apply 15-20 kg of a three-element compound fertilizer (N:P:K=15:15:15) per mu as base fertilizer, so as to ensure the nutrient requirements of sweet corn.
