Is agarwood suitable for courtyard planting? How many years to profit, planting conditions, methods and symbolism
The agarwood tree is Aquilaria sinensis, also known as white wood incense, tooth incense tree, daughter incense, honey incense tree, Guan incense tree. It is one of the world's rare precious medicinal plants and is a national second-class protected plant. So can agarwood be planted in a home courtyard? How many years of planting before it can make money? What symbolism does it have? What are the planting conditions and methods? According to the agarwood planting base in Guangxi, one-year-old seedlings have stems 50-70 cm tall. Generally after 3 years of planting they grow vigorously, and leaves can be harvested to make health tea; after 4-5 years they flower and bear fruit, and the fruit can be used to extract refined oil, which is an important medicinal and chemical raw material; after 8-10 years they grow relatively fast and can undergo artificial agarwood formation. Agarwood is a scarce and valuable Chinese medicinal material on the market, a top-grade spice, and can also be made into expensive handicrafts.
Can agarwood be planted in a home courtyard?
If it meets the growth environment requirements of agarwood and there is a courtyard of sufficient size, it can be planted. However, this plant of the Thymelaeaceae family has medicinal value and is generally grown for production, while it is rarely planted in courtyards as a landscape tree species.
What symbolism does the agarwood tree have?
Since ancient times, agarwood has received extremely noble treatment. In modern times it has become the best symbol for displaying personal taste and wealth. The religious world values the pure spiritual energy of agarwood, brimming with spiritual fragrance. Wealthy families display agarwood to highlight noble temperament and create a peaceful atmosphere during negotiations. Literati and refined scholars enjoy the elegant and noble life connotations and pleasures inspired by agarwood. Agarwood is the crystallization of a spiritual tree that survives after being placed in a dead situation.
What are the planting conditions and methods for agarwood?
Conditions:
1. Adaptability to temperature
White wood incense likes a high-temperature environment and requires an annual average temperature above 20°C to grow and develop well: the lowest temperature is 3°C, and it can also adapt to brief low-temperature frost in winter. When the temperature is relatively high, white wood incense grows quickly.
2. Light requirements
White wood incense seedlings and young plants are relatively shade-tolerant and not resistant to exposure, which is beneficial to growth. In high-mountain environments with shorter sunshine, or in dense forests on mountain slopes, it has growth advantages. However, the shade cannot be too great; generally 40%-50% is suitable. At maturity it likes light, and only with sufficient light can it flower and fruit normally, with plump and strong seeds: only under sufficient light conditions can it be promoted to form agarwood and form high-quality agarwood.
According to surveys: wherever the shade degree is high, water is too abundant, and agarwood formation is very slow, or it may not form agarwood at all. For example, in Yantang Management Area, Conghua County, Guangdong Province, white wood incense trees have grown for 40-50 years, exceed 10 m in height and more than 30 cm in DBH, yet although they were inoculated with fungus many times, they simply did not form agarwood.
3. Adaptability to soil
White wood incense has low and not strict requirements for soil, and can grow in acidic sandy loam, yellow loam and red loam. In the wild state, white wood incense in thin clay soil grows more slowly, grows somewhat worse, and has poorer vigor, while the wood forms agarwood more readily than under superior water and fertilizer conditions, and the fragrance is also stronger and the resin more abundant: it is also easier to form agarwood, and the quality of the agarwood is relatively better. Under conditions of deep, fertile soil, however, the bark tissues of the wood are loose, less resin is secreted, very little agarwood forms, and the quality is also poor.
4. Water requirements
White wood incense likes moisture and tolerates drought, requiring annual rainfall of 1500-2000 mm. In a relatively moist environment, white wood incense grows quickly in both height and thickness, while on dry, barren slopes it grows poorly but still survives. According to white wood incense planted in Yangzhen, Lufeng County, after more than 20 years of planting, the height does not exceed 6 m and the DBH is only 20 cm; although growth is poor, the quality of the agarwood is good.
5. Altitude requirements
In the mountainous and hilly areas south of 24° north latitude in China, from an altitude of 1000 m to low-altitude hills and plains, there are wild distributions and cultivation; try to keep it below 500 m above sea level.
Methods:
1. Choose spring for the planting time of agarwood; spring has sufficient rain, and planting agarwood at this time makes it easier to survive.
2. Choose rainy spring days for planting; agarwood will survive more easily, and just after planting there is sufficient rain, which helps the roots absorb water.
3. Improve the soil before planting. Agarwood likes acidic soil, so improve the soil before planting.
4. Provide appropriate shading in summer. Although agarwood can tolerate drought, it is not suitable for growing in a high-temperature environment for a long time.
5. Prevent insects and pests. Agarwood should be protected against pests, so that the resin content of the agarwood can be both greater and better.
