Banana is one of the most distinctive tropical fruits in the tropical and subtropical regions of China. Bananas grow quickly; planted in the same year, they bear fruit in the same year. At present, banana is an export fruit of Xishuangbanna and has become a major pillar industry of the Xishuangbanna economy. The following introduces banana cultivation techniques as follows:

I. Orchard establishment

A relatively ideal site for bananas is a microclimate environment where frost is not severe, with good air circulation and open terrain. The soil should preferably be loam, clay loam or sandy loam with deep soil layers, loose texture, fertile soil, sufficient sunlight, good drainage and irrigation conditions, shelter from wind, and a relatively low groundwater table, with no standing water and convenient transportation.

In the Xishuangbanna region, bananas are mainly planted using paddy fields and mountain land as banana orchards. When choosing paddy fields for banana planting, deep plowing should be carried out first to allow full weathering, then the bed surface should be raked level and raised to prevent water accumulation on the bed surface. The orchard should then be divided into several sections, with large and small ditches as well as drainage and irrigation ditches opened. The size and depth of the ditches should be determined according to local specific conditions, and it is best if accumulated water can be quickly drained within a short time. When choosing mountain land for banana planting, deep plowing should be carried out first, and flood control measures should be well implemented to reduce rainwater scouring of the mountain body during heavy rain and reduce economic losses. Building a water storage tank at a relatively high location is beneficial for irrigation, allowing bananas to grow well and achieve high yields.

II. Selection of banana varieties

Excellent varieties with high yield, good quality and strong adaptability to the Xishuangbanna region should be selected. Their pseudostems are thick, the plants are tall and robust, the leaves are relatively long and upright, and the stalk height is 2~3m. The fruit bunch is long, the fruit fingers are 20~30cm long, the single fruit weight is 150~200g, and the yield per plant is 20~40kg. The fruit shape is relatively good in comb form, with a beautiful appearance, firm flesh and good taste. They are relatively resistant to leaf spot disease and suitable for planting in banana orchards with a medium level of management.

III. Field planting

1. Choosing the planting site:

It can be planted in southern provinces and regions such as Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, and Taiwan, China, where there is little frost and snow. Choose a sunny, wind-sheltered slope with half-sand and half-clay soil, with a water source nearby, or dig a rainwater collection pool to make watering convenient during droughts.

2. Seedlings:

For large-scale commercial planting, virus-free seedlings cultivated by agricultural science institutes must be selected, as this ensures quality. If it is for personal hobby, one can dig sturdy banana seedlings one or two chi tall (with fibrous roots) from nearby banana fields and plant them.

3. Planting season:

Planting can be done throughout the year, but it is best to choose the rainy months of April to June. Newly planted banana seedlings should be watered promptly with settling water. In summer, pay attention to sun protection, generally using a sunshade net for shading. In winter, use pearl cotton to cover the banana seedlings for warmth.

4. Planting method:

After clearing the site, dig pits 0.5 m deep and 0.5 m wide, and apply sufficient base fertilizer. Pond sludge, fermented farmyard manure, plant ash, and peanut bran humus soil are best. A spacing of 3 m by 3 m is generally the most ideal, and 2 m by 2 m is also acceptable, but during later management the plants may be too dense, so excessively dense banana plants must be cut away frequently.

5. Management:

When newly planted banana seedlings continuously grow new banana leaves, it proves that they have taken root and sprouted. Usually weed frequently (manual weeding; herbicides must not be used). Water appropriately during droughts, and dig drainage ditches during the rainy season to prevent excessive water accumulation. Cut off withered banana leaves in time. Bananas do not use pesticides. If there are pests such as banana leafhoppers, spraying water boiled with stemona (a traditional Chinese medicine) and chili peppers is sufficient.

6. Fruiting:

After the banana grows 32-----36 banana leaves, it enters the fruiting period. One month after the banana sets fruit, cut off the purple banana tail and use bamboo or wood to support the fruit stalk to prevent the fruit from falling. In summer, bananas enter the maturity period in about 3 months, and in autumn, winter and spring in about 5 months. They can be harvested when 8---9 ripe. In winter, bananas should be bagged and kept warm with pearl cotton to prevent the bananas from being frozen by frost and snow.

7. Harvesting:

Two people operate: one person holds the banana to prevent the fruit from falling to the ground and being damaged, and one person cuts down the banana plant.

8. Ripening:

Putting in some ripe bananas is the best way to ripen unripe bananas.
