Jade Plant Growing Methods and Precautions: How to Water for the Best Results?
The jade plant belongs to the Crassulaceae family. Despite the word "tree" in its name, the jade plant is actually a succulent introduced from South Africa. Its appearance is as translucent and beautiful as jasper. It is native to Africa and has now been introduced and cultivated in China. The jade plant is not cold-tolerant and also fears strong light. It prefers to grow in cloudy conditions, and well-draining sandy loam is best. So what are the jade plant growing methods and precautions? How should you water a jade plant for the best results?
I. Jade Plant Growing Methods and Precautions
Growing Methods:
1. Pot Cultivation
Choose a suitable flower pot. You can buy a porcelain pot, plastic pot, ceramic pot, etc., mainly to match your home decor. The size of the pot mainly depends on the size of the jade plant you buy; generally, a pot diameter of 15-30 cm is most suitable.
2. Soil Selection
As mentioned above, the jade plant is not cold-tolerant and needs to be cultivated in a ventilated spot. Sandy soil is best; other soils may give poorer results. Many flower markets nowadays will mix the soil ratio for you, saving you a lot of trouble.
Remember: the jade plant does not need excessive watering. Keep the soil dry, otherwise it can easily cause root and stem rot and kill the plant.
3. Watering Method
Although the jade plant likes dry conditions, if the soil in the pot does not drain well, or if you water too much, it can also cause waterlogging and lead to root rot. You should control the amount of water according to weather changes. In winter, indoor temperatures are low, so you can reduce watering frequency to about once every 5-10 days. In summer, when temperatures are high, you can choose to water once every 3-7 days. Also pay attention to indoor ventilation. If no one is home, try to place the plant on the balcony to absorb dew.
4. Fertilizing Method
The jade plant grows relatively quickly, so do not fertilize too much. About 2-3 times a year with a nitrogen-based fertilizer is enough. The fertilizer concentration should not be high, and it is best applied during the vigorous growing season.
The jade plant has low fertilizer requirements. When it is larger, it only needs base fertilizer.
5. Temperature Requirements
The jade plant can be kept indoors year-round; just avoid direct sunlight. The indoor temperature is best kept within 10-12 degrees Celsius. Too high a temperature may cause leaf drop and other problems in the jade plant.
Precautions:
1. During the growing period, take care of the jade plant carefully and do not frequently trim buds or branches. Pay attention to maintaining the overall shape of the jade plant. After October, you can choose to move it indoors; outdoor temperatures in winter are too low, and indoor temperatures are just right.
2. The jade plant can grow well under indoor indirect light. Do not place it in strong light. In summer, try to avoid moving it outdoors; prolonged exposure to the sun can cause the jade plant's leaves to drop.
3. In spring, as temperatures rise, the jade plant will speed up its growth. While maintaining light, pay attention to controlling the amount of water and increase it gradually. When the outdoor temperature is above 15 degrees Celsius, you can place the jade plant on the balcony in a spot where rain cannot reach it, so it can absorb dew. On rainy days, you can reduce watering frequency.
II. How Should You Water a Jade Plant for the Best Results?
1. The jade plant prefers a dry environment, so watering should not be too frequent.
2. During the growing period, the jade plant can be watered at a frequency of every 3-5 days.
3. When growing a jade plant in summer, water according to the wet or dry state of the soil; there is no need to follow a fixed cycle. The same applies in autumn.
4. Water less in winter. Winter temperatures are low, and too frequent watering will make the soil too moist, which can then cause the jade plant's roots to rot and die.
5. Take care patiently and observe the jade plant's growth according to daily temperature changes, so you can develop your own care system.
