How to Grow Schefflera in Water? Remember These 5 Care Tips
Schefflera, also called umbrella tree, can be grown in soil or in pots, stays green all year round, is a plant with great ornamental value, and is very popular. So how is Schefflera grown in water? What good methods are there for cultivation? What precautions should be taken when growing Schefflera? Please read on with these questions and join me below!
I. Water Culture Methods
1. Water Cutting Method
From an old Schefflera plant, cut a semi-lignified leafy branch about 10cm long with 2-3 or more nodes, remove the lower leaves of the Schefflera branch, keeping only 1-2 palmate compound leaves at the top, immerse the lower 2/3 of the Schefflera branch in a glass vessel filled with clean water, and place it in a bright spot indoors.
In the early stage of water culture, the temperature for Schefflera needs to be kept above 15°C. Usually after about 10 days, white callus tissue begins to form at the cut end of the Schefflera branch immersed in water, and soon adventitious roots differentiate and form from these places. After about 45 days, the water-rooted Schefflera branch produces roots more than 6cm long and grows white root hairs; at this point normal care can begin.
2. Repotting and Root Washing Method
Carefully take the soil-grown Schefflera out of the soil, wash the soil off the Schefflera roots clean, and plant it in a transparent glass bottle containing clean water (tap water needs to be left to stand for 2-3 days). In the early stage of water culture, change the water once every 2 or 3 days, and also keep the temperature above 15°C. Give the water-cultured Schefflera appropriate light, and the Schefflera will grow lush and green.
II. Care Methods
Changing Water
For water-cultured Schefflera, change the water once a week, and add some hydroponic plant nutrient solution each time you change the water, which can make the water-cultured Schefflera grow better. The water level for water-cultured Schefflera must not be too high; do not soak the trunk part of the Schefflera.
Temperature
The suitable growth temperature for Schefflera is 15-25°C, and it can also grow above 30°C. The overwintering temperature should not be lower than 5°C, otherwise it will cause the Schefflera leaves to drop.
Light
The growth of Schefflera needs sufficient light; abundant sunshine can make the Schefflera leaves bright in color. Schefflera is shade-tolerant, and in partial shade the leaves can also be deep green. However, you should still regularly give Schefflera some sun, but avoid blazing sun exposure in summer.
Pruning
Schefflera grows relatively quickly, so pay attention to shaping and pruning.
III. Basic Care Knowledge for Schefflera
1. Best Propagation Time:
If Schefflera is propagated by sowing, it can be sown after -- month. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 20~25°C. Keep the pot soil or seedbed moist. If sown as soon as collected, under suitable temperature conditions, seedlings can emerge in about 15~20 days.
2. Best Growing Soil:
The best growing soil for Schefflera is fertile, loose, well-drained sandy soil. You can use peat soil, leaf mold plus a little base fertilizer, or sandy soil for cultivation, ensuring good air permeability and drainage of the soil.
3. Growth Humidity Requirements:
Schefflera likes humidity and fears dryness. Under conditions of high air humidity and sufficient soil moisture, the stems and leaves grow luxuriantly. Schefflera has a certain ability to adapt to temporary drought and dry air.
4. Best Growing Temperature:
The general growing temperature for Schefflera is 15-25°C; below 5°C it will drop leaves, so pay attention to ventilation at ordinary times.
5. Best Growing Light:
Schefflera is a partial-shade plant; four hours of direct sunlight per day is enough, and it must not be exposed to blazing sun.
