What are the fastest and most effective methods and plants for removing formaldehyde?
Everyone knows that a newly renovated home contains a large amount of the toxic substance——formaldehyde, and cannot be moved into right away, so how do you quickly remove formaldehyde? What method is most effective? What plants remove formaldehyde?
1. The hazards of formaldehyde
I can tell you with certainty that the so-called zero formaldehyde claimed by merchants does not exist! It is nothing more than a promotional gimmick. Unless you choose solid wood for all your renovation, formaldehyde will be present. Especially in summer, in renovated homes formaldehyde levels exceeding the standard are a common phenomenon.
Although formaldehyde is an irritating gas, it actually has no smell. As the primary and most stubborn indoor pollution source, the problem is not how toxic it is, but that it is released continuously and slowly over the long term, with a release cycle of up to 3-15 years. And when levels are 2-3 times over the standard, you usually cannot smell it at all! If you can smell it, then it is severely over the standard! The harm formaldehyde does to the human body also varies with concentration. Above 6 times the standard, it can cause pulmonary edema; at 30 times, it can cause immediate death!
Here I want to urge everyone: keep renovation simple! Ventilate more! Put more thought into choosing home renovation materials, and say no to formaldehyde at the source as much as possible!
2. How to quickly remove formaldehyde, and which method for removing formaldehyde is most effective
1. The most effective and fastest way to remove formaldehyde is to open the windows and ventilate!!!
Opening the windows to ventilate brings fresh air in from outside, diluting the indoor formaldehyde concentration. Once the formaldehyde concentration is lower, it is safe.
Formaldehyde has two major characteristics: first, its release rate speeds up at high temperatures; second, it is easily soluble in water. Under conditions of high temperature, high humidity and negative pressure, the speed at which formaldehyde breaks down and is released is accelerated. High temperature, such as summer or running air conditioning or heating indoors; high humidity, running a humidifier; negative pressure, in addition to opening windows to ventilate, you can spend about 300 yuan on an exhaust fan to draw air out of the room.
Someone tested this in their own new home: running the heating, running a humidifier, and using an exhaust fan with an airflow of 520m3/h to draw air out, running nonstop for 24 hours. After ten days the formaldehyde concentration dropped by half, and it did not rebound. In fact, summer is a great season for removing formaldehyde.
2. Install a fresh air system
The method big spenders love most. Opening windows to ventilate is very suitable in summer, but once winter comes it seems a bit impractical. If your renovation budget is not tight, you might as well spend 20,000 to 30,000 yuan to install a fresh air system. It not only continuously brings fresh outdoor air indoors, but also filters PM2.5 and performs heat exchange, ensuring no loss of indoor temperature.
3. Air purifiers (with activated carbon filters)
Air purifiers were not originally designed for formaldehyde; it is just that formaldehyde pollution has been hyped up in recent years. The activated carbon filter in an air purifier can physically adsorb formaldehyde. Although the amount adsorbed is small, it still has some effect. However, note that to prevent secondary pollution, the activated carbon filter should be replaced regularly, generally once every 7-8 months.
Having said all that, I personally think the most effective method for removing formaldehyde after renovation is still ventilation. If you do not have the conditions to install a fresh air system, perhaps you can try the method of heating, humidifying and exhausting air indoors. It costs little and is effective.
3. Misconceptions about removing formaldehyde (not recommended)
1. Bamboo charcoal, activated carbon and diatom mud adsorbing formaldehyde
Can they adsorb it? Yes, but there are 2 conditions: one is that air flow is needed so the formaldehyde comes into contact with these adsorbent materials; the second is that the contact area must be large. But the problem with adsorption is that after saturation it is released again. In other words, when these materials have adsorbed enough formaldehyde, if the temperature rises they will release the formaldehyde they absorbed, causing secondary pollution.
2. Green plants absorbing formaldehyde
Some green plants do have the ability to absorb formaldehyde, such as spider plant. Research shows that in a 100 sq m home with a ceiling height of 3 m, where the formaldehyde concentration is 0.5 mg per cubic meter, 1 spider plant would need to work for 1 year to absorb the free formaldehyde, and this does not even count the amount continuously released by the boards. In other words, keeping a few dozen or a hundred spider plants at home might, in theory, be slightly useful.
3. Photocatalysts decomposing formaldehyde
If adsorption does not work, then surely decomposition of formaldehyde will? Photocatalysts can break formaldehyde down into water and carbon dioxide. Never mind that this stuff may cause secondary pollution, and that you may not even be able to buy the genuine product; photocatalysts also require an essential environmental condition to remove formaldehyde: ultraviolet light. However...
(1) The amount of ultraviolet light that photocatalysts need cannot be provided by the ultraviolet light in sunlight; the room would need to be filled with ultraviolet array lamps to meet the requirement.
(2) The formaldehyde that photocatalysts can handle is only the formaldehyde around them; anything more than a few centimeters away cannot be treated.
(3) Photocatalyst particles are PM2.5 to the -10th power, which for a home environment is yet another new air pollutant
(4) At present, most domestic photocatalyst products cannot remove formaldehyde over the long term; they only last one to two months. In Japan, photocatalysts are mainly used on building exterior walls, not for removing formaldehyde indoors in homes.
4. Formaldehyde removal products
There are also dedicated formaldehyde removal products on the market now. For example, formaldehyde scavengers rely on chemical reactions to “remove” formaldehyde. The essence of this method is to oxidize formaldehyde into formic acid, but it itself decomposes easily. Spraying it on wooden boards not only damages the wood, but also loses its effectiveness within a few hours, so it is impossible to achieve “one spray and it is gone forever.” Moreover, high-concentration hydrogen peroxide sprayed into the air will create new pollution hazards for people. Other oxidants and reducing agents also cannot effectively remove formaldehyde, and they introduce similar new pollution.
4. Which green plants remove formaldehyde
Although green plants have very little effect on absorbing formaldehyde, they still play an important role in purifying the air and decorating a space. Below are several common green plants!
1. Golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
As everyone knows, golden pothos is hailed as the “flower of life” and is a wonder for removing formaldehyde. It is not only easy to keep alive, but also brings environmental benefits. When a new home has just been renovated, the floors and walls produce harmful substances such as benzene and formaldehyde. Golden pothos has extremely strong adsorption capacity and purifies the air. One pot costs about 10 yuan, economical and practical.
2. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Known as the “king of formaldehyde removal,” spider plant has strong photosynthesis at night and can absorb more than 80% of the toxic gases indoors. Placing one pot of spider plant in a room of 8-10 sq m is equivalent to an air purifier. Spider plant also has a great decorative effect and can be hung on the wall without taking up any space at all, killing two birds with one stone.
3. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum)
The name may sound a little unfamiliar, but it is fairly common in daily life. The peace lily is a hydroponic plant and does not have high requirements for its growing environment. Its main function is to absorb the waste gas people exhale and the formaldehyde released indoors. Do not underestimate this leaf; its effect is great.
4. Umbrella tree (Schefflera arboricola)
The umbrella tree is a blessing for smoking households. It can absorb the nicotine floating in the air and then, through its own transformation, release it as a non-toxic, harmless substance. Keeping one pot of umbrella tree at home costs about 20 yuan, yet it brings nothing but benefits.
5. Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa)
The most obvious function of the Swiss cheese plant is that it can absorb carbon dioxide at night and then give off oxygen, providing a comfortable sleeping environment. Although it cannot match plants such as golden pothos and spider plant at removing formaldehyde, its ability to adsorb carbon dioxide and improve the indoor environment should not be underestimated, making it very suitable to place a pot in the bedroom.
6. Rubber plant (Ficus elastica)
The rubber plant has very vigorous vitality and extremely strong adaptability. Its greatest function is to absorb harmful substances such as dust and formaldehyde in the air. If the home faces a street, there will be a bit more dust indoors, so you can place two pots of rubber plant to purify the indoor environment.
