Garland chrysanthemum, also known as hao cai, peng hao, chrysanthemum greens and so on, is a leafy green vegetable with relatively high nutritional value. Because it is highly adaptable, cheap to grow and tasty, it is widely cultivated, and it is now grown in many regions. So where does garland chrysanthemum come from? How much does a jin of seed cost? How is it sown?

I. Where does garland chrysanthemum come from?

Garland chrysanthemum originated in the Mediterranean, and it is grown in most regions of China, with common areas including Hunan, Hubei, Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shandong, Jilin, Jiangsu and other places. Large-leaf garland chrysanthemum is mostly grown in southern regions, while small-leaf garland chrysanthemum is mostly grown in northern regions.

II. What is the market price of garland chrysanthemum seed per jin?

The market price of garland chrysanthemum seed is generally around 15 to 20 yuan per jin, but due to differences in market, variety and quality, there will be some variation in price; even at its most expensive it does not exceed 20 yuan per jin, so the specific price still needs to be checked at the local market.

III. How is garland chrysanthemum seed planted?

1. Choosing the site: Garland chrysanthemum likes to grow in loose soil that is rich in organic matter and has good drainage, so when choosing a site, it is enough to choose slightly acidic soil with relatively good fertility.

2. Fertilizing: Garland chrysanthemum has low fertilizer requirements. Generally, before sowing, it is enough to apply about 200 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and about 25 kg of phosphate fertilizer per mu.

3. Sprouting: Before sowing garland chrysanthemum, first soak the seeds in 30-degree warm water for 3 to 4 days, then remove them and dry them, and place them in a 25-degree environment to let them sprout.

4. Sowing method: There are many ways to sow garland chrysanthemum; it can be broadcast, sown in rows or sown directly. If broadcasting, about 4 kg of seed per mu is enough; if sowing in rows or sowing directly, about 2 kg of seed per mu is enough, then cover with soil and water lightly.

5. Field management:

(1) Transplanting: One week after sowing garland chrysanthemum, it begins to grow seedlings and leaves. When the seedlings have grown three leaves, the denser seedlings can be gently pulled up by hand and transplanted elsewhere, then watered lightly to let them grow naturally. Transplanted seedlings are best given nitrogen fertilizer once every 20 days to ensure sufficient nutrients and normal growth.

(2) Watering: Garland chrysanthemum has low water requirements; generally it is enough to keep the soil moist, but in winter, watering should be controlled to prevent downy mildew and damping-off, which would affect seedling growth.

(3) Fertilizing: After garland chrysanthemum has grown into plants, its fertilizer requirements are low. Generally, fertilizer can be applied once each time the plants grow 12 cm taller, and topdressing once after each harvest, to ensure sufficient nutrients in the soil. When topdressing, remember not to scatter the fertilizer directly into the soil, so as not to burn the roots and cause the plants to die.

IV. When is garland chrysanthemum harvested?

Garland chrysanthemum has a short growing period and can generally be harvested after about 50 days of growth, but to keep it fresh and tender, it is best to harvest in the morning. In addition, if you want to harvest again, you can leave about 3 cm of the base of the main stem during the first harvest to promote regrowth of the plants for a second harvest.
