In high mountain and plateau regions grows a strange and beautiful flower that attracts botanists and photographers from all over the world every year to admire it. So “the most coveted wildflower” Meconopsis, what is it? What benefits and effects does it have? How is it cultivated?

1. What Is Meconopsis

Meconopsis is an annual or perennial herb with yellow sap. One species is native to Western Europe, while the remaining 48 species are all distributed in the China-Himalaya region, though the most primitive species is found in Central China. China has 38 species, concentrated in the southwest, of which Yunnan alone accounts for 17 species, mostly concentrated in the snow mountain meadows, alpine shrublands and scree slopes of northwestern Yunnan at an altitude of 3000--5000 m, with a few species in the subalpine zones of central and northeastern Yunnan. It is also distributed in the Qilian Mountain area of the northwest. It is a famous ornamental plant, and some species can be used as medicine to treat illnesses.

2. Distribution Range of Meconopsis

There are 49 species of Meconopsis in the world, mainly produced in south-central Asia, with China being the most abundant, where 40 species are distributed in Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu, Shaanxi and other provinces, of which Yunnan accounts for 17 species, mostly concentrated in the snow mountain meadows, alpine shrublands and scree slopes of northwestern Yunnan at an altitude of 3000--5000 m, with a few species in the subalpine zones of central and northeastern Yunnan.

The Meconopsis family is thriving, with a total of 49 species. Apart from one species found in Western Europe, the rest are all distributed in China's Himalaya and Hengduan Mountains. Lijiang alone has 8 species. They are mostly concentrated in the snow mountain meadows, alpine shrublands and scree slopes of northwestern Yunnan at an altitude of 3000-5000 m, with a few species in the subalpine zones of central and northeastern Yunnan. The Hengduan Mountains are the center of the Meconopsis family, with 39 species of Meconopsis here, among which the light blue Lijiang Meconopsis and the bright yellow Gongshan Meconopsis are the most famous. It is also distributed in the Qilian Mountain area of the northwest, commonly yellow, with a stunning appearance.

3. Main Values of Meconopsis

1. Ornamental Value

The climate characteristics of high-altitude zones: biting frost, intense radiation, strong winds and thin soil, extreme temperature differences between day and night, and highly variable weather. Herbaceous plants and small shrubs often form cushions, prostrate on the ground. Yet Meconopsis can actually laugh at the sun against the wind in such a harsh environment, growing tenaciously. It blooms in the scree slopes where no grass grows, at an altitude of up to 5000 m.

2. Medicinal Value

Meconopsis not only has brilliantly colored flowers with high ornamental value, but some species can also be used as medicine to treat illnesses. For example: Meconopsis integrifolia (also called “Yellow Hibiscus” in Lijiang), Meconopsis napaulensis (also called “Mountain Lettuce” in Luquan), the whole plant is used as medicine, with the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying, clearing heat and relieving cough; the leaves collected before flowering treat acid reflux in the stomach; the flowers reduce fever and induce vomiting, reduce inflammation, and also treat bruises and fractures. Meconopsis racemosa, called “Red-haired American Ginseng” and “Snow Ginseng” by ethnic minorities, its root is used as medicine to treat qi deficiency, edema, asthma and other conditions, with the effect of tonifying the middle and boosting qi.

Regrettably, outstanding and exotic flowers such as Meconopsis, primroses, gentians and alpine rhododendrons have long been buried among the lofty mountains and ridges. The Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has begun systematic surveys of these precious alpine flowers; and the Lushan Botanical Garden, amid misty clouds and beautiful scenery, has also begun introducing and domesticating these famous flowers.

4. Cultivation Techniques of Meconopsis

Blue-flowered Meconopsis is cold-hardy, preferring a climate that is dry in winter and moist and cool in summer, and likes soil rich in organic matter with good drainage. It does not tolerate transplanting and can be propagated by direct sowing in autumn. The cultivation site should be chosen in a well-ventilated and relatively shaded place. Prevent strong sunlight in summer.
