Rhododendron, also known as yingshanhong, mountain pomegranate and zhaoshanhong, is a flower commonly found on mountainsides or beneath pine forests. Because of its varied colors and very beautiful blooms, it is deeply loved by flower enthusiasts, and many people now like to keep it at home or in the office to enhance the indoor environment, so how much does a rhododendron bonsai cost per pot on the market? When does it bloom? How do you grow it to extend the flowering period?

1. How much does a rhododendron bonsai cost per pot on the market?

The market price of rhododendron bonsai is fairly affordable, generally around 50 yuan per pot, but prices vary somewhat depending on the variety, quality, place of origin and market. For example, a rhododendron bonsai of a superior variety can reach around 50 yuan per pot, while an ordinary one costs around 20 yuan per pot on the market, so the exact price still needs to be checked at your local market.

2. When does rhododendron bloom?

Rhododendron generally blooms from April to June, and with proper care techniques the flowering period can be extended by about one month. However, because varieties and growing regions differ, the blooming time also varies somewhat. For example, in northern regions, greenhouse cultivation brings blooms in January to February; open-field cultivation brings blooms in March to May; and in higher-altitude areas, blooms appear in July to August, so the exact blooming time still depends on local climate and other factors.

In addition, rhododendrons are also divided into spring rhododendron, summer rhododendron, east rhododendron, west rhododendron, alpine rhododendron and so on. Among them, spring rhododendron generally blooms in April to May. Summer rhododendron generally blooms in May to June, east rhododendron generally blooms in spring, west rhododendron generally blooms in April to May, and alpine rhododendron generally blooms in April to May.

3. How do you grow rhododendron to extend the flowering period?

1. Light

Rhododendron does not have high light requirements and generally only needs to grow in scattered light, but in the early bud stage, light should be increased so the buds absorb more sunlight and carry out photosynthesis to promote blooming; then in the late bud stage, light should be reduced, which can effectively extend the flowering period. However, flowers grown this way are not very brightly colored.

2. Temperature

Rhododendron fears heat, and its suitable growing temperature is between 15 and 25 degrees. If it is above 32 degrees or below 5 degrees, growth stops, so in summer and winter, try to keep the temperature well controlled. If you want to extend the flowering period, you need to adjust the temperature: generally keep the nighttime temperature at around 15 to 18 degrees and the daytime temperature at 20 to 30 degrees, and after flowering, lower the temperature by a few degrees, which can extend the rhododendron's flowering period.

3. Humidity

Rhododendron likes to grow in a humid environment, so if you want to extend the flowering period, you can appropriately adjust the humidity to above 70 during the bud stage, but do not exceed 80, and just keep the ground moist.

4. Removing flowers

Rhododendrons do not bloom all at the same time. If the flowers that bloom relatively early are removed, the flowering period can also be extended.

4. Can rhododendron be kept in the bedroom?

There are many kinds of rhododendron, and some are toxic, so when it is not clear whether a plant is toxic, it is best not to keep it in the bedroom to avoid physical discomfort. If you really want to grow it, you can move it to a balcony and give it appropriate light to promote its growth and flowering.

5. Is rhododendron toxic?

Most rhododendrons are non-toxic, but because there are many varieties and more than 60 kinds are toxic, try to be careful when growing them.

Generally speaking, rhododendrons with bright red petals are non-toxic, but rhododendrons with white petals or yellow petals are toxic, and both the leaves and flowers are toxic; after accidental ingestion, symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea appear, so you must be careful when growing them, especially if there are children at home, it is best not to grow them.
