When Is the Best Time to Plant Peach Trees? Cultivation Methods and Variety Introduction
Peaches originated in our country, and peaches and peach products (such as canned peaches, diced peaches, preserved peaches, peach juice, etc.) have always been deeply loved by consumers. Now the cultivation area of peach trees in the rose family (Rosaceae) is growing larger and larger. So when is the best time to plant peach trees? How to plant them? What varieties are there?
I. When is the best time to plant peach trees?
Peach tree planting can be divided into autumn planting and spring planting. Autumn planting is generally done after the leaves fall in autumn (in fact, it should be entering winter by then), and a period before the soil freezes is better. There is basically no recovery period for the seedlings, which is conducive to earlier spring sprouting, and the trees grow more vigorously than those planted in spring. Spring planting is generally done after the soil thaws in spring and before peach buds sprout. Because after planting, the root system still needs some time to start growing, which amounts to a recovery period, early growth will be somewhat slower, but having passed the low winter temperatures, it will not suffer frost damage. In cold northern regions, autumn planting can sometimes cause frost damage such as branch shriveling, leading to dead seedlings, and in some places trees are easily lost, so spring planting can also be used.
II. How to plant peach trees?
1. Site selection and cultivation:
Walnuts are suitable for growing in warm, deep soil with good drainage, in sandy loam and black soil, and are best planted on sunny slopes and in sheltered spots. Newly planted young trees need sufficient water and fertilizer, and should be sprayed with New High Lipid Film, which can ensure above-ground water evaporation and seedling water transpiration, isolate pests and diseases, shorten the recovery period, and speed up root development.
2. Shaping and pruning:
To make walnuts bear fruit earlier, with high and stable yields, reasonable shaping and pruning is a very important cultivation technique. The pruning period for walnuts differs from that of ordinary fruit trees. It is done after the fruit is harvested and before the leaves turn yellow. Apply callus anticorrosion film promptly to the pruning wounds to promote wound healing and prevent invasion and infection by pathogens.
3. Stabilizing flowers and setting fruit:
Spray Fruit-Stem Strengthening Agent at the bud stage, young fruit stage and fruit expansion stage respectively, to thicken the fruit stem, increase nutrient transport, prevent flower drop, improve pollination capacity, increase fruit set rate, speed up expansion, and ensure high-quality, high-yield fruit. The alternate bearing of the tree, with heavy and light years, causes an imbalance in the tree's load, which affects both balanced returns and the health of the orchard trees. At the flower bud differentiation stage each year, apply Flower Promotion King No. 2 once by ringing brushing, which can promote flower bud differentiation, suppress excessive summer shoot growth, strengthen flowers, and improve pollination capacity and fruit set rate.
4. The main pests of walnuts are:
Walnut tussah moth, walnut shoot-boring moth, and walnut fruit weevil. The main diseases of walnuts are: walnut black spot disease and walnut dieback disease. The control measure is to spray targeted pesticides to kill them. At the same time, spray Tree Protection General onto the tree body, and spray New High Lipid Film on the orchard ground to preserve heat and moisture, ensuring safe overwintering.
III. What varieties of peach trees are there?
Qingyan No. 1
The fruit of this variety is relatively small, each peach weighing about 250 grams. The fruit surface is bright red, the flesh is white, the taste is sweet, the juice is abundant, and the flesh is firm but the stone does not separate from the flesh, giving a good mouthfeel. This peach tree ripens early, and the peaches that first appear on the market are generally of this variety.
Jingyu
The fruit of this variety looks very much like the peaches in the picture, with a pointed top, the whole peach bright red, and a relatively large size. The flesh is juicy and the taste is sweet. It is a variety of relatively good quality, generally coming on the market after mid-August.
Meixiang
The fruit of Meixiang is short and flat, oval in shape, and large in size, with a single fruit reaching up to about one jin. The base color of the fruit is white, with bright red all over, and the flesh is dense and juicy. It generally ripens in late August, and this variety has a relatively high yield.
Dazhenbao Chiyue
The fruit is medium in size, with a white base color and brilliant red all over. The mouthfeel is crisp and firm, juicy, fresh and sweet. The biggest feature of this variety is that the fruit carries a rich fruity aroma, is of superior quality, stores easily, and has a stable yield, generally coming on the market in early August.
Laishan Honey
The fruit is relatively tall, close to round, and very large in size, with the largest reaching up to 900 grams each. The exterior is bright red, the flesh is delicate, and the sweetness is very high, making it both good-looking and good-tasting. It comes on the market in early September, has a high yield, and stores easily.
Beijing Late Honey Peach
This is a later-ripening variety. The fruit is relatively large, but the surface coloring is not complete, with part of it dark red. It has high sweetness, a good mouthfeel and excellent quality, mostly coming on the market in late September and early October, just in time for National Day, making it more convenient to sell.
Richuan Baiho
The fruit is round, relatively light in weight, generally about 220 grams each. The fruit surface is fully red, and the flesh inside is mostly yellow-white, which is the most obvious feature distinguishing it from other varieties. It tastes sweet, is rich in juice, has a good mouthfeel, and is also relatively convenient to store.
There are many more varieties of peach trees. Hongtian, Chongyanghong, and Zhonghua Shoutao are all varieties of relatively good quality. With the development of breeding technology, new varieties of peach trees will continue to appear, and their quality will continue to improve.
