How to Grow Azaleas (Rhododendron simsii) and the Conditions for Winter Blooming
As living standards improve, people begin to cultivate hobbies, and growing flowers is one that many choose. Azaleas are deeply loved by everyone, and in some regions they are also called yingshanhong, mountain pomegranate, etc. In South Korea, Nepal and Belgium, the azalea is a national flower symbol. Besides its beautiful appearance, the azalea also has important medicinal value. So how do you grow azaleas? When is the flowering season? Can they bloom in winter? Are azaleas toxic?
1. How do you grow azaleas?
1. Choose suitable soil
Azaleas are relatively sensitive to sunlight and are generally suited to being placed in a naturally lit, shady spot, so choosing the soil also requires more care than with other plants. Taking the Yangtze River as the dividing line between north and south, in regions north of the Yangtze River, azaleas are mostly grown as ornamental plants, and it is suitable to use a mix of sandy soil, garden soil and leaf mold for cultivation. In regions south of the Yangtze River, because rainfall and temperature are more suitable, they are planted directly in the ground. Just choose a fertile, loose sandy loam.
Note: no matter which region you are in, after choosing the soil you must pay attention to controlling the amount of watering.
2. Pay attention to ambient temperature and light
Azaleas are very sensitive to light. Generally, in winter when there is sunshine, we place them on a balcony or outdoors, which helps them absorb light and supplement nutrients. But if it is a cold outdoor setting with lots of rain and snow, it is not advisable to move them outside. The lowest temperature an azalea can withstand must not be less than 5°C, otherwise it will suffer frost damage and stop growing. In summer, it needs to be moved indoors and placed in a well-ventilated living room for cultivation. Summer outdoor temperatures are high, so it is not advisable to place them outdoors; strong light exposure will cause azaleas to become short of water and dry out.
3. Pay attention to watering frequency and timing
Azaleas generally can be watered once every 3-5 days in the relatively humid spring and autumn seasons, and not too much each time, to avoid causing root rot. In winter, when temperatures are lower, they can generally be watered once a week to keep the soil moist. When watering, pay attention to the water temperature; it should not be too icy cold, because cold water poured onto dry soil in summer will cause unbalanced soil absorption.
4. Prune branches and buds with the right technique
Whether it is azaleas or other plants, branches and buds need to be pruned. Azaleas are generally pruned in spring and autumn. Those who are not professional enough can refer to more video tutorials, cutting away the heavy branches and buds that crush the flowers, as well as dead leaves and diseased dead branches, all of which need to be cleaned up. Give the azalea a good growing environment, which will help it bloom later.
2. When is the azalea flowering season?
The azalea flowering season is from April to June, at the transition between spring and summer. During this period azaleas are vivid and colorful, and very beautiful as potted plants. The flowering period can also last about one month. The length of the flowering period mainly depends on everyone's care; if care is not adequate, such as not watering or removing pests in time, it may also be shortened to as little as half a month.
3. Can azaleas bloom in winter?
The normal flowering time of azaleas is the April to June we mentioned, but with people's needs and the development of technological cultivation techniques, making azaleas bloom in winter is not impossible.
Azaleas that bloom in winter are generally Western azaleas. Western azaleas grow in a greenhouse environment for a long time and can be cultivated without the requirements of nature; they are a variety that can be controlled artificially. Around the Spring Festival, Western azaleas will bloom and continue until spring before the flowers wither and fall.
You can buy Western azaleas at the flower market; just ask the flower market owner at the shop where you buy them clearly about the cultivation points.
4. Are azaleas toxic?
There are many kinds of azaleas, and not all kinds are toxic. Generally, we can make a preliminary judgment about whether an azalea is toxic based on its color.
Red azaleas are basically non-toxic, while yellow and white azaleas are toxic, and even their leaves may carry toxicity.
The beauty of azaleas is something you can better appreciate after growing them yourself. I hope this summary of knowledge is helpful for your care.
