Azalea, also known as yingshanhong and shan shiliu, has bright red corollas and high ornamental and medicinal value. Azaleas sometimes suffer from pest infestations, mainly red spider mites, azalea lace bugs and aphids. Below is an introduction to azalea cultivation techniques: azalea pests and control methods.

1. Red spider mites

Red spider mites on azaleas mainly occur on the underside of the leaves; when the population is relatively large, they are also distributed on the underside of the leaves and the tender shoots. After red spider mites appear, the leaves develop small, scattered yellow-green speckles.

Control method: create a well-ventilated environment so that the azalea grows vigorously and increases its resistance to red spider mites. If the population is relatively large, the seriously affected areas can be pruned off to reduce their numbers; if the affected branch tips are numerous and densely clustered, insecticides of biological origin such as abamectin and other nicotinoid-type insecticides can be sprayed.

2. Azalea lace bugs

Azalea lace bugs mainly occur on the underside of the leaves. When they appear, some black spots and small insects about 2-3 mm long with transparent wings can be seen on the underside of the leaves, and yellow-green speckles also appear on the upper surface of the leaves, but the speckles are finer than those appearing when red spider mites occur. When they appear, they spread from the leaf veins toward the leaf margins, and the infestation in the center of the leaf is noticeably greater than at the leaf margins.

Control method: if there are relatively few pests, the diseased leaves can be picked off and burned to prevent reinfection; if the population is relatively large, imidacloprid can be used for control.

3. Aphids

Aphids mainly occur on the underside of the leaves and on the tender shoots, where some small green-white insects appear, some winged and some wingless, usually clustered together.

Control method: when only a few appear, they can be taken to a faucet and rinsed off; or some yellow sticky insect traps can be hung around the azalea; tobacco-soaked water can also be used for control. If the population is relatively large, imidacloprid can be used for spraying. After one application, a second application should be carried out 3-7 days later to kill the larvae that have not hatched from the eggs.
