Figs are not only a newly emerged “high-priced internet-famous” fruit in the fruit industry, but also praised as one of the “fastest to come into production” fruit trees due to their short fruiting time, high yields, and few pests and diseases, which is why they have become a planting project choice for many rural entrepreneurs. So how should fig trees be planted to achieve both good quality and high yields? Below, we introduce the specific planting methods for fig trees.

1. How are fig trees planted? What are the planting methods?

1. Variety selection

Recommended fig varieties that are relatively high-yielding and high-quality include Bojihong, Ziguo, Bordeaux, Zibao, 108B, 110C, 118D, 121E, and others. These varieties have strong disease resistance and adaptability, large fruit, high sugar content, and a relatively refreshing taste.

2. Selection of planting plot

The fig tree is a fruit tree with a relatively well-developed root system, so when planting, you should choose weakly alkaline or neutral loam (sandy loam) with deep soil layers. If the soil itself is somewhat acidic, it is recommended to first improve the soil with limestone before planting.

3. Cultivation and field planting

Growers nowadays buy fig saplings directly on the market. To ensure the survival rate, it is recommended to focus on spring planting, with autumn planting as a supplement. Spring planting can be done from mid-March to early April each year, while autumn planting can be carried out at the end of November.

When field planting, it is recommended to dig deep holes, apply sufficient base fertilizer, and water thoroughly, with a row spacing of about 2 m and a plant spacing of about 1.5 m.

4. Fertilizer and water management

On the basis of applying sufficient base fertilizer at planting, figs also need topdressing about once every 2 months. Before fruiting, nitrogen fertilizer should be the main type, while during the fruiting period, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium fertilizers can be added.

Note that after each topdressing, the soil should be turned and watered, but do not water too much each time; just keep the soil somewhat moist.

5. Pay attention to pest and disease control

Generally, as long as they are cared for properly, figs usually do not suffer from pests and diseases, which is also one of the advantages of growing figs.

However, more prevention can still be done against rust disease, anthracnose, and longhorn beetle pests.

2. When can fig trees bear fruit after planting? What is the yield per mu?

Under normal circumstances, fig trees can be planted and bear fruit in the same year, ripening successively from June to November.

The yield per mu of figs in the first year can reach about 500 kg, while the high-yield period for figs is the 3rd to 5th year after planting. With proper management, the yield per mu can reach more than 2,500 kg.

As for yield, if the variety is selected properly and the planting method is reasonable, there is no need to worry too much; figs stand out in planting projects precisely because of their high yields.

3. What is the market price of figs per jin? How are the profits?

1. Market price of figs

The market demand for figs is relatively large, but because the fruit itself is relatively difficult to keep fresh, the market price of figs is slightly more expensive than that of other fruits.

Generally, the market purchase price of fresh figs is about 15 yuan/kg, while the market retail price is above 24 yuan/kg.

Dried figs can sell for more than 80 yuan per kg, and preserved figs, if the quality is relatively good, can sell for more than 120 yuan per kg.

2. Planting profits of figs

If the fig trees reach their high-yield period, the output value per mu of figs is roughly around 80,000-100,000 yuan. After deducting costs such as land rent, labor, seedlings, management, and transportation, the profit can reach around 40,000-50,000 yuan, which is still quite considerable.

In summary, for entrepreneurs who want to go into fruit tree cultivation, if the geographical environment is suitable, fig cultivation is worth considering. Moreover, the country now strongly supports rural revitalization, and combining fig cultivation with rural tourism for development has even better prospects.
