How much does a jin of Chinese mahogany seeds cost? Detailed planting time and methods
Chinese mahogany, also called Xiangchunling, Xianglingzi, Xiangchunzi, etc., and in the Anhui region also called Chunmiao, is a deciduous tree plant of the Meliaceae family, genus Toona, native to central and southern China, and now commonly cultivated throughout the country. The tree is tall, and besides being used as food, it is also an excellent tree species for landscaping. So how much does a jin of Chinese mahogany seeds cost? When should they be planted? What are the specific planting methods?
1. How much does a jin of Chinese mahogany seeds cost?
The price of Chinese mahogany seeds is still quite low, with the market price per jin being around 80 yuan. The price of Chinese mahogany seeds is mainly affected by the following factors:
1. The size of that year's Chinese mahogany seed harvest;
2. Prices are higher from February to May and from August to October each year;
3. The purchase quantity: the more you buy, the lower the price; the less you buy, the higher the price;
4. Each batch will have some carefully selected seeds, and the price of these seeds will be slightly higher.
2. When should Chinese mahogany seeds be planted?
Chinese mahogany seeds can be sown in spring or autumn. The best sowing time in spring is from February to May, and the best sowing time in autumn is around August to October. Seeds sown in these two periods have the highest germination rate and grow best.
3. Planting methods for Chinese mahogany seeds
1. Seed collection. Chinese mahogany flowers from May to June, and the fruit matures from October to November. When the fruit matures it is reddish-brown, and at this time the fruit can be collected to obtain seeds. Seeds should be collected from tall, robust mother trees aged 15 to 30 years. Dried and cleaned seeds have a thousand-grain weight of 15 grams and a germination rate of 40 to 50%.
2. Warm-water seed soaking. Soak Chinese mahogany seeds in warm water at 40°C for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly, then place them in water at 20 to 30°C and soak for 24 hours. After the seeds have absorbed enough water, remove them, drain off excess water, and then proceed to germination.
3. Moisture-retaining germination. Spread the Chinese mahogany seeds 3 cm thick and cover them with a clean cloth, then place them in a 20 to 25°C environment to germinate while retaining moisture. During germination, turn them 1 to 2 times a day and rinse them 2 to 3 times with clean water at about 25°C. When 30% of the seeds have sprouted, they can be sown.
4. Timely sowing. For Chinese mahogany, choose a seedling-raising field that is flat, has sufficient sunlight, good drainage, and sandy or fertile soil. Combine land preparation with fertilization, spread evenly, and turn thoroughly. Sow the germinated seeds evenly and cover with 2 cm of soil.
5. Seedling management. Chinese mahogany seeds emerge about 7 days after sowing. Before emergence, strictly control watering to prevent soil crusting from affecting emergence. When the seedlings emerge and grow 4 to 6 true leaves, thinning and final spacing should be carried out.
6. Harvesting. Under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, they can be harvested about 18 days after sowing. Standards for qualified products: the hypocotyl below the bud is more than 10 cm long, the cotyledons are fully expanded, no new leaves have appeared, they are fresh and clean, with no root rot or disease, and a rich fragrance. Pull them up with the roots, wash them clean, then package them for market.
Note: Strictly control seed quality, and during production take care to remove rotten seeds at every stage.
