Although petunias and morning glories look alike, the two are plants of different families and genera. The former belongs to the Solanaceae family and the Petunia genus, while the latter belongs to the Convolvulaceae family and the Ipomoea genus. Compared with morning glories, petunias have bright flower colors and a longer flowering period, spanning almost the entire summer and autumn, making them one of the most popular home-grown flowers for many people. So what are the planting time and methods for petunias? How many years can they live after planting?

I. Planting time for petunias

Petunias are usually propagated by sowing and can be planted in all four seasons. However, since the suitable temperature for petunia seed germination is 18℃—20℃, it is best to choose spring sowing and autumn sowing, as both the survival rate and quality will be higher.

The spring sowing time is from early May to early June, while autumn sowing is from October to mid-November.

Of course, if the climate that year is rather abnormal, the sowing time can be adjusted according to the temperature conditions at the time.

II. Planting methods for petunias

1. Soil selection

It is recommended to buy potting soil from the market, then mix it with sandy soil at a 1:1 ratio, and water the soil until moist. There should be no standing water; slightly moist is enough.

2. Sowing

Petunia seeds are rather small, so when sowing, simply scatter them directly on the soil without covering them with soil. After scattering the seeds, spray some water on the soil surface, then place them in a sunny spot. Generally, they will sprout about a week after sowing.

3. Seedling stage management

After the petunia seeds sprout, you must carefully monitor the growth of the seedlings during the seedling stage. One of the most important points is not to water too much; water again only after the surface soil has dried.

Then give them plenty of sun, which helps petunia seedlings “grow roots.”

For fertilizing, stick to the principle of light fertilizer applied frequently; you can fertilize once every half month.

4. Planting out and management

When petunia seedlings have grown about 5 true leaves, they can be transplanted and planted out. Note that base fertilizer should be applied to the soil when planting out.

For the first 3 days after planting out, it is recommended not to place them directly in the sun to bake; generally, just place them in a ventilated, shady spot with a little scattered light.

After planting out, it is better to keep them dry than waterlogged. Do not water too frequently. After flower buds appear, simply spray a little foliar fertilizer.

5. Pest and disease control

Common diseases of petunias include white mold, leaf spot, and viral diseases; the main pest is aphids. Usually pay attention to ventilation and sun exposure for prevention. Once disease occurs, relevant treatment chemicals can be purchased according to the symptoms for control.

III. How many years can petunias survive after planting?

Petunias are 1-2 year plants, so if managed properly, each planting can survive at most 2 years. But if little attention is paid to care in daily maintenance, then it depends on whether that petunia's own vitality is strong or not.

Generally, after petunias bloom, you can collect the seeds and plant them again.
