Growing lilies on the balcony: do this and they will bloom abundantly, grow well and easily fill the pot
Lilies bloom beautifully. If you want to grow them at home on the balcony, how exactly should you plant and care for them? Below is an introduction to balcony lily growing methods. These few steps sum it up: after planting, water them and give them plenty of sunlight. Do these things and you are sure to get lots of blooms, good growth and an easily filled pot!
How to grow potted lilies:
1. Planting time: potted lilies are best planted in September to October.
2. Soil: the growing medium is best made by mixing leaf mold, sandy soil and garden soil in a 1:1:1 ratio, with plenty of fully rotted compost and a small amount of bone meal added at the bottom of the pot as a base fertilizer. The planting depth is generally about 2 to 3 times the diameter of the bulb.
The potting soil should not be too wet, otherwise the bulbs rot easily. Potted lilies should be repotted once a year, with new growing medium and base fertilizer.
3. Fertilizing: lilies do not have very high fertilizer requirements; usually it is enough to apply fertilizer sparingly when growth begins in spring and at the start of flowering. Some growers abroad believe that lilies need more nitrogen and potassium fertilizer, and that during the growing period it should be applied once every 10 to 15 days, while phosphorus fertilizer should be limited, because too much phosphorus fertilizer causes the leaves to turn yellow.
During the flowering period, phosphorus fertilizer can be added for 1 to 2 days. To make the bulbs plump, spent flowers should be cut off promptly after blooming to reduce nutrient consumption. As for watering, it is only necessary to keep the potting soil moist, but during the peak growing season and in dry weather you must water moderately and often, and frequently sprinkle water around the flower pot to raise the air humidity.
