Among the many autumn fruits, the pomelo can be considered the largest, and with its thick peel, abundant flesh and good storability, it has earned the reputation of a “natural fruit can”. Although the pomelo has rough skin and thick flesh, it is also a beauty with considerable inner qualities: “its flesh is white, its fragrance is delicate, and its charm lingers”. Where are the Hubei pomelo bases? When do they mature? How much does one jin generally cost?

1. Where are the Hubei pomelo bases?

Both Yichang and Enshi in Hubei have pomelo bases. Hubei honey pomelo is relatively well known; its fruit is small at the top and large at the bottom with a rather flat base, thin peel, abundant juice, sweet taste, flesh that melts in the mouth, and an excellent variety.

2. When do Hubei pomelos mature?

Hubei pomelos generally mature from late October to early November, and autumn is a good season to eat pomelos. Pomelos are highly nutritious, containing very rich protein, organic acids, vitamins, and essential elements for the human body such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and sodium. Modern medicine holds that pomelos contain a physiologically active substance called naringin, which can reduce blood viscosity and decrease the formation of blood clots. Therefore, eating pomelos can promote wound healing and has a relatively good preventive effect on septicemia and cerebrovascular diseases such as cerebral thrombosis and stroke, making it especially suitable for middle-aged and elderly people.

However, pomelos should not be eaten in excess, and some people are not suitable to eat them either. For example, pomelos are cold in nature, so people with a weak and cold constitution who eat them may easily develop symptoms such as diarrhea; people currently taking blood pressure medication should also eat less, because pomelos contain a chemical substance called furanocoumarin, which can cause the drug level in the blood to multiply and blood pressure to drop too much, thereby posing a threat to health.

3. How much does a Hubei pomelo generally cost per jin?

Recently, Hubei pomelo prices have fluctuated considerably, roughly ranging between 2.6-7.5 yuan/jin, as large quantities of pomelos have come onto the market, and competition among different varieties is also relatively strong.

4. Points to note in pomelo cultivation

1. Insufficient supply of soil fertility, or an unbalanced application ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, resulting in an insufficient supply of nutrients to the tree.

2. Phenomena such as root rot in honey pomelos cause insufficient root vitality; in particular, drought, overcast rain, low temperatures and low-lying land can all affect root vitality.

3. Insufficient supply of micronutrient fertilizers, leading to blocked growth of the terminal shoots, such as deficiency of zinc, magnesium and iron.

In response to the above causes, the following remedial measures are recommended:

1. Foliar spraying of functional nutrient solutions, such as “Aiduoshou”, and humic acid foliar fertilizers.

2. Foliar application of plant growth regulators. For example, spraying brassinolide about 3 times.

3. Try to eliminate unfavorable factors in the orchard. Mountain orchards should strengthen the construction of irrigation facilities, and low-lying land should strengthen the construction of drainage facilities to reduce waterlogging.

4. Attach importance to the application of farmyard manure and organic fertilizer, and strengthen soil improvement measures so that the overall soil fertility meets the growth requirements of pomelos. When terminal shoot yellowing occurs, if it is caused by nutrient deficiency, organic liquid fertilizer can be added (that is, root irrigation measures, applying some functional nutrient solutions such as amino acid and humic acid liquid fertilizers).
