How do you grow pothos in water so it grows as lush as a waterfall?
Ever since the term “value for money” came along, “versatile” also started trending across fields, and pothos is the high-value, versatile “spokesplant” of home decor among green plants. Pothos can be grown in soil or in water; in today's push for green and eco-friendly living, water culture is naturally many people's first choice, so how do you grow pothos in water so it grows as lush as a waterfall?
1. Choose a suitable pot for water-grown pothos
Generally, a glass bottle with a wider bottom is best, as this helps the pothos root system develop. However, it is best to choose a pot with a built-in filter, what people often call a “water-culture wonder,” as shown in the picture below.
2. Cleaning the pothos
Generally, water-grown pothos is started by selecting healthy plants from soil-grown pothos. The main task is to wash the pothos roots and also clean the stems and leaves thoroughly.
3. Place the pothos into the water-culture container
Then place the pothos into the water-culture container. If you are using the water-culture wonder shown in the picture above, you can put a few clay pebbles in the planting basket to help the pothos root system grow better, then add water. However, pay attention to water quality, water temperature and water level.
1. Water quality
Tap water is also fine, but it is best to first let the tap water sit for 20 minutes to release chlorine, then add a few drops of specially formulated water-culture nutrient solution to the tap water.
2. Water level
With water-grown pothos, pay special attention to the water level. It must not be too high, otherwise root rot is very likely. It is best to submerge 1/3 of the pothos roots, just enough for them to breathe normally.
3. Water temperature
Water-grown pothos can be done in all four seasons. Normal tap water temperature is fine; there is no need to artificially give the pothos “warm water” to keep it warm or “ice water” to cool it down.
4. Change the water properly
If you cannot tell when to change the water while growing pothos in water, it is advisable to observe the water quality more often. Once it becomes slightly cloudy, you can change the water.
Actually, it is best to change the water once a week in summer, once every 2 weeks in spring and autumn, and about once every 3 weeks in winter.
Changing the water is not simply pouring out the old water and adding new water. You need to take out the whole pothos plant, rinse the roots and the water-culture container with tap water, then add new water with water-culture nutrient solution and put the pothos back in.
Some people ask whether water-grown pothos needs fertilizing. Actually, pothos does not need much fertilizer, especially water-grown pothos; the nutrient solution is enough for it to grow lushly. But if you want it to grow like a waterfall, you still have to tend it carefully every day, and prune the pothos when necessary.
Tip: In summer and early autumn, the pothos root system is more prone to oxygen deficiency, so you can gently shake the outside of the water-culture bottle once a day.
