How to deal with root rot in cyclamen? Care for it this way for delicate flowers and tender leaves
Cyclamen is known as the “king of potted flowers”. The cyclamen has a graceful plant shape, rather brilliant flowers, and gives off waves of delicate fragrance, which can ease people's stress and help us relax. But many flower lovers say cyclamen is prone to root rot, so how should cyclamen root rot be dealt with? How should it be cared for so the flowers are delicate and the leaves tender?
1. How to deal with cyclamen root rot?
1. Treatment method for cyclamen root rot
If the tuber part of the cyclamen has already rotted, you can use a sharp blade to cut away the rotted part, apply plant ash to the wound, let the wound dry in the shade, and replant it in soil that drains and breathes well. It will gradually recover over about a month, and during this period water it as little as possible. If most of it has already rotted, there is no value in trying to recover it, and it is best to discard it.
2. Causes of cyclamen root rot
The main causes of cyclamen root rot include low temperature and infection by pathogens, and the most common causes are the high temperature and stuffy heat of summer, poor ventilation, or excessive water accumulation.
(1) Overwatering
During the growing period, overwatering will keep the potting soil in a saturated state, leaving the roots suffocated for a long time. Their absorbing capacity declines, oxygen in the soil is depleted, bacteria become active, and many harmful gases are produced, which leads to tuber rot.
(2) Improper potting and fertilizing
Cyclamen is a bulbous plant, and the normal growth of its roots is tied to the health of the whole plant. If the tuber is planted too deep when potting, and fertilizer covers its top, rot is also easily caused.
2. How should cyclamen be cared for so the flowers are delicate and the leaves tender?
1. Water
Cyclamen itself is fairly drought tolerant and does not like waterlogged conditions. If watered too much, the roots of the cyclamen will have difficulty breathing, causing the roots to rot; this will not only affect flowering, but in serious cases will kill it outright. So when watering the plant, be sure to control the amount of water. You can wait until the cyclamen's leaves wrinkle before watering, and when watering, do not let water drip onto the leaves.
2. Humidity
Cyclamen likes a humid environment. If the humidity is too low, it will affect the growth of the cyclamen and thus hinder the plant from flowering. So when the air is relatively dry, you can spray clear water around the plant to increase the air humidity; only then can the cyclamen grow normally and bloom more.
3. Light
Although cyclamen does not like direct strong light, if it is kept for a long time in a place with weak light, it cannot carry out photosynthesis, which affects the plant's growth and is why the plant fails to bloom. So when growing cyclamen, keep it in a place with diffused light and often turn the direction of the pot; this will let the plant grow better.
4. Ventilation
If, when growing cyclamen, it is kept in an environment with poor ventilation, the air will not circulate, and combined with dust pollution in the air, this will affect the plant's formation of flower buds and prevent it from blooming better. So when growing cyclamen, keep it in an environment with circulating air and open the windows often; this will let the cyclamen bloom better.
