2. What should you do if garlic bolt seedlings emerge unevenly?
1. Reasons for uneven garlic seedling emergence:
When reserving garlic seed, high-quality seed garlic with plump and large cloves was not selected, and the quality of the reserved seed garlic was relatively poor. Before sowing, inferior cloves were not removed, or the seed garlic was not graded by size before sowing. In addition, planting garlic too shallowly, poor soil moisture conditions (clayey soil, compacted soil or poor soil), or insufficient water (after sowing, one watering is usually given) can affect garlic germination and lead to uneven seedling emergence.
2. Measures for early and uniform garlic bolt seedling emergence:
(1) Scientific seed selection
For those who choose to keep their own seed, at the harvest of the previous crop, select garlic bulbs with thick stems, dark green leaves, a good root system, no pests or diseases, large size and sturdiness as seed. At the same time, pay attention to timely harvest. The harvest time is generally 25 to 30 days after harvesting the garlic scapes; too early or too late will affect seedling emergence.
Whether using self-reserved seed or purchased seed garlic, before sowing, remove inferior cloves such as incomplete cloves, insect-damaged cloves, dried and dehydrated cloves, yellowed cloves and moldy seed garlic, and select good-quality seed garlic. Then grade the seed garlic and plant by grade; the garlic bolts that grow will be neat and easier to manage later.
(2) Sun-drying
Before sowing, dry the seed garlic in the sun for 2 to 3 days. This can loosen the cloves, make them easy to separate without damage, promote early sprouting and produce uniform seedlings. When drying, do not expose the seed garlic to direct sunlight, so as to avoid forming sweet garlic.
(3) Remove the garlic skin and garlic heel
Because the garlic skin and garlic heel seriously affect the water absorption capacity of the seed garlic and hinder the growth of new roots, removing the garlic skin and garlic heel during seed selection can greatly promote sprouting and rooting. Therefore, vegetable growers can appropriately damage the garlic skin before sowing.
(4) Garlic top-cutting
First separate the garlic bulbs into cloves, soak them in water for 36 hours, then take them out, and cut off the top of each clove with a knife. Be careful not to damage the embryo bud when cutting; cut off about one quarter of each clove, and it is best if a small hole is visible in the middle. Then arrange them evenly on the bed surface as usual, apply sufficient base fertilizer, cover with soil, and cover with a layer of grass for shade; seedlings will be uniform in 3 days.
(5) Soaking seed in medicinal solution
(5.1) Soak the seed garlic cloves in a 500-times carbendazim solution for 12 to 16 hours, take them out and dry them, then sow. This can increase the seedling emergence rate, and the seedlings will be uniform and strong.
(5.2) First mix 500 grams of quicklime with 50 kg of water, soak the seed garlic for 24 hours, then take it out, then mix 1 kg of sulfur powder with 50 kg of seed, then place the seed garlic in a cool place and cover with fine sand, which can promote early development.
(6) Pay attention to planting depth and water timely
The planting depth of garlic is generally required to be about 3 cm. After planting, cover with soil evenly. After planting garlic, water timely according to soil moisture conditions to ensure uniform garlic seedling emergence.
