1. What kind of vegetable is amaranth?

Amaranth is an annual herbaceous plant in the genus Amaranthus, family Amaranthaceae, order Caryophyllales. Its other names include yanlaihong, laoshaonian, laolaishao, and three-colored amaranth. The leaves of amaranth are ovate or rhombic, and the leaf color is green or purplish red. The amaranth plant is soft and smooth with a strong vegetable flavor, sweet and fragrant on the palate, and has the effect of moistening the intestines and stomach and clearing heat. It is called differently in different parts of our country, also known as “fukui”, “xiecai”, “xingcai”, and in some places also named “hongmohu”, yunxiangcai, yuntiancai, and so on. It is mainly distributed in the temperate and subtropical regions of East Asia and Southeast Asia.

III. How to grow amaranth to earn 6000 yuan per mu?

Using warm winter greenhouses to grow overwintering amaranth, it can be marketed at the Spring Festival, the harvest period lasts as long as 4 to 5 months, the yield per mu can reach more than 3000 kg, and the output value exceeds 6000 yuan.

1. Select good seed

Choose colored amaranth with good palatability, high yield, strong stress resistance, and cold tolerance, such as the red-leaf round type Dahongpao, Quanyehong, and so on.

2. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose a plot with flat terrain, fertile soil, convenient drainage and irrigation, and few weeds. In early November, plow deeply 15 cm to 20 cm. Along with deep plowing, apply 3000 kg of high-quality decomposed organic fertilizer and 25 kg of diammonium phosphate per mu as base fertilizer. Then make flat beds 1 m to 1.2 m wide, rake the bed surface fine and level, loose on top and firm below.

3. Sow at the right time

Sowing can be done in mid-to-late November. Before sowing, water thoroughly to wet the bottom soil. Use 3 kg to 4 kg of seed per mu, mix the seeds with an appropriate amount of fine sand and evenly broadcast them onto the bed surface, press firm with feet or cover with a layer of manure soil, then cover with plastic film. Then use 2 m long bamboo strips to build a small arched shed 70 cm to 80 cm high, and cover it with film.

4. Strengthen management

On the basis of watering thoroughly to wet the bottom soil, do not water again before emergence; seedlings emerge in 5 to 7 days. After the cotyledons emerge from the soil, remove the plastic film and carry out the first weeding and thinning. When 2 true leaves have grown, carry out the second weeding and thinning, and apply the first fertilizer and water the first time. Generally, apply 10 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus compound fertilizer per mu, and after 15 days apply the second fertilizer along with watering, applying 5 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. After that, each time you harvest once, apply fertilizer and water once, applying 5 kg to 10 kg per mu each time or applying 1000 kg of dilute human and livestock manure/urine fertilizer. At the end of March the following year, as the temperature rises, the small arched shed can be removed, ventilation strengthened, to prevent high-temperature damage to seedlings and to control amaranth white rust.

5. Harvest at the right time

When amaranth has grown 4 to 6 leaves and the plant height is 10 cm to 15 cm, the larger seedlings can be thinned for market, and amaranth can be replanted at the same time, so that harvesting can be done in batches until the plot is cleared in early June. Note that each thinning harvest should keep the large and leave the small, and keep the remaining seedlings uniform, to increase yield.
