Tomato is a vegetable with extremely high nutritional value, rich in vitamin C, with antioxidant and skin-brightening benefits, and is deeply loved by the public. So, what planting methods are there for tomatoes? Below, the editor will introduce them one by one.

1. Seed selection

Choose varieties with a high germination rate and cold tolerance. Before selecting seeds, test the seed germination rate. The higher the germination rate, the fuller the seeds and the higher the uniformity, the greater the harvest, and the better the economic benefit. Good seeds should have a germination rate higher than 90%. In addition, the cold tolerance of the seeds should also be tested. In southern China, temperatures are higher than in the north, and seeds are more sensitive to cold, so cold-tolerant seeds should be selected.

2. Sowing and planting out

The suitable time for sowing is mid-to-late August to early September. After germinating the seeds, bury them in nutrient soil in the seedbed, with a suitable seedbed temperature of 25-30 degrees. After emergence, ventilate and harden the seedlings, with a suitable daytime temperature of 25-30 degrees and a suitable nighttime temperature of 15-20 degrees. During the period when the seedlings develop true leaves, pay attention to controlling the day-night temperature difference. One week before planting out, pay attention to ventilation.

Tomato has a long growth cycle and a high fertilizer requirement, so sufficient base fertilizer should be applied before planting out. The following is the recommended amount of fertilizer: calculated per 667 sq m, apply 2000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure, 100 kg of ternary compound fertilizer, and 100 kg of soybean cake.

Carry out planting out on a sunny day, selecting healthy, strong plants for planting out, and maintain a plant spacing of about 45 cm. After planting out, water and loosen the soil.

3. Fertilizer and water management

Do not water during the seedling-stressing stage, because the roots need to grow downward. Before the first truss of fruit sets firmly, the tomato is mainly in early growth, and basically no watering or fertilizing is needed for the rest of the time.

Tomato has a high demand for nitrogen fertilizer and potassium fertilizer, and also needs an appropriate amount of phosphorus fertilizer. Once the first truss of fruit has set firmly, 20-30 kg per 667 sq m of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer can be applied. When waiting for the second and third trusses of fruit to expand rapidly, topdressing can be done about 3 times.

4. Pest and disease control

The common pests and diseases of tomato mainly include early blight, gray mold, stem rot, aphids, and ladybirds.

1. Early blight

When early blight occurs, it generally starts from the lower leaves and gradually spreads upward. In severe cases, all the leaves wither and die, causing great harm to the leaves and fruit.

The following measures can be taken when early blight occurs:

(1) Rotate with non-solanaceous crops once every 3-5 years, and change the crop.

(2) Choose disease-resistant varieties when selecting seeds.

(3) Soak the seeds in hot water at about 60 degrees for half an hour, take them out and soak them in limewater, wash them clean, and then sow.

2. Gray mold

Gray mold generally occurs in a low-temperature, high-humidity environment. When it occurs, try to avoid watering. After it occurs, promptly pick off diseased fruit and diseased leaves.

For gray mold, flowers should be dipped with a treatment at flowering. When the first truss of tomato fruit blooms, apply 50% duomeiling wettable powder. The third application should be on the day before watering to promote fruit swelling, using 65% jiameiling wettable powder at 800 times dilution for control.

3. Stem rot

Stem rot can be controlled through fertilization. Nitrogen fertilizer should be applied in an appropriate amount. At the same time, apply nitrate nitrogen such as sodium nitrate to diseased plants, and be careful not to apply ammonium nitrogen. After applying fertilizer twice, spray a mixture of 0.2% glucose and 0.1% potassium citrate to increase the sugar and potassium content in the leaves.

4. Aphids and ladybirds

When these two pests occur, 50% aphid-killing pine oil at 2500 times dilution can be used, or 20% fenvalerate emulsifiable concentrate at 2000 times dilution can also be used for control.
