Orchid grass is also called orchid, its proper name is Eupatorium fortunei, and it is a perennial evergreen herb of the Orchidaceae family. Orchids, together with bamboo, chrysanthemum and plum, are known as the “Four Gentlemen”, and there is a saying about orchids that looking at the leaves is better than looking at the flowers. Orchid grass is a traditional famous flower of China, and the orchid market and its potential market are very broad. Below we introduce the cultivation methods for orchid grass.

1. Soil

When growing orchid grass, choose the soil it likes; here, humus soil is the main type. We can buy this kind of soil directly, or cultivate it ourselves. Note that when cultivating it, the soil should have good air permeability, as this is beneficial to its growth.

2. Fertilizing

Orchid grass likes fertilizer. Before planting, put some base fertilizer into the growing soil to help it grow faster. Later, during the growth period, the fertilizer requirement will be somewhat greater, so a sufficient amount of fertilizer must be ensured. According to the growth habits of orchids, the fertilizer chosen should be liquid fertilizer or foliar fertilizer, and its concentration should be lighter than that for other flowers. Orchid fertilizing should be done by applying thin fertilizer frequently. Organic fertilizer, that is, farmyard manure, should be diluted, and note that it can only be used after fermentation treatment; it can be applied once every ten-plus days. Other inorganic fertilizers (chemical fertilizers) should be used according to the instructions.

3. Changing the soil

In the process of growing orchids, note that the soil should be changed once a year at a fixed time, as this is more beneficial to their growth. While changing the soil, also note that appropriate additional fertilizing should be done, but the amount of fertilizer should be appropriate and not too much, to prevent burning the roots.

4. Watering

Watering is very important for the growth of orchids, and reasonable watering is the key to growing orchids well. The water used to water orchids must be clean and slightly acidic; never water them with sewage containing pathogens. If using tap water, note that it should first be exposed to the sun for two hours to remove the chlorine in the water before it can be used to water orchids. When the temperature is relatively high in summer, water evaporates relatively quickly, so water once a day. In spring and autumn, water once every two or three days. If it is winter, water less or not at all, to prevent frost damage, which can cause orchids to be frostbitten or even frozen to death.

5. Temperature

Orchids have extremely high temperature requirements and cannot be too high or too low. When winter comes, we should put them indoors. After moving them indoors, note that windows should be opened to keep the air flowing, and the temperature should be kept above 10 degrees, and cannot be too low. In summer, proper shading treatment should be given to orchids; the temperature cannot be too high, and it is best to keep them in a cool, ventilated place.

6. Pruning

During the growth of orchids, promptly prune yellow leaves caused by various reasons to prevent loss of water and nutrients, so that the other healthy leaves can grow better. When the last flower on the summer orchid inflorescence has been open for one week, cut it off 3 cm from the pot surface.

7. Light

Orchids like light. The more light there is, the more vivid its leaf color will be and the sturdier its stems and branches will be, but orchids must not be exposed to the scorching sun. Simply place them in a place indoors with good light and use diffused light.
