The money tree, whose scientific name is Pachira aquatica, also known as Malabar chestnut and Guiana chestnut, is a small tree of the family Malvaceae, native to the region from Mexico in Central America to Costa Rica. It is a plant that likes high temperature and high humidity and needs sufficient light, and it is widely planted in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China. So how should we grow a money tree?

How to grow a money tree

1. Soil

The money tree likes fertile, well-drained, fairly loose soil. You can use peat soil and river sand mixed at a ratio of 1:1, or directly mix garden soil, river sand and leaf mold in equal amounts. After the money tree is arranged and shaped into a plant with a swollen base stem, it can store water and nutrients inside itself, so the money tree does not have very high requirements for soil.

2. Water

The money tree needs sufficient water to grow better. Generally, in spring and autumn it can be watered once a week; in summer, due to the high temperature, it can be watered once every two to three days; in winter, watering once every half a month is enough. The money tree can store water inside itself, so it is fairly drought-tolerant. At the same time, avoid overwatering, which causes water to accumulate in the soil and can lead to leaf drop or even death. However, the leaves can be sprayed frequently to ensure relatively high air humidity and meet the money tree's requirement for a high-humidity environment.

3. Fertilizing

The money tree is a plant that likes fertilizer. Nutrients must be supplied to the money tree reasonably so that it can grow better. Generally, during the growing period, a thin nitrogen fertilizer is applied about every twenty days, which can promote more vigorous leaf growth. Note that topdressing is not suitable in the hotter summer and the colder winter. If the leaves of the money tree turn yellow, you can spray a 500-fold urea solution on the leaves to restore the green color. At the same time, note that fertilizing must not be excessive, otherwise it may cause the problem of strong fertilizer burning the roots.

4. Light

The money tree is a day-neutral plant and mainly relies on its green bare stems for photosynthesis, and it needs relatively strong light before budding. When growing a money tree, sufficient light must be provided, as photosynthesis can promote its healthy growth. Light is relatively strong in summer and autumn. To avoid the situation where the sunny side of the money tree's bare stems dies from local water shortage, appropriate shading should be carried out.

5. Temperature

The money tree likes a high-temperature environment. Before budding, the temperature should be kept between 25°C and 38°C. At other times, the suitable growing temperature for the money tree is between 20°C and 35°C. Too high a temperature is also unfavorable for the growth of the money tree. If the temperature is too low, roughly below 5°C, the money tree will suffer cold damage, leaf drop will occur, and in severe cases it will die. Keeping the growing temperature of the money tree above 20°C can provide a suitable environment for vigorous growth.
