Hotbed chives, also known as chive sprouts or white chives, are a common vegetable in winter. Because of their high nutritional value, varied cooking methods and affordable price, they are deeply welcomed by people, and they are currently planted in many regions. So how are hotbed chives grown? What are the planting methods?

1. Introduction to hotbed chives:

1. What are hotbed chives?

Hotbed chives are also called yellow chives. Their appearance, length, thickness and so on are similar to those of ordinary chives, except that hotbed chives are grown under lightless conditions, so the chive leaves turn from green to yellow and basically become hotbed chives. Their cultivation method is similar to that of yellow garlic chives, as both are grown under lightless conditions. Their leaves are yellow-white in color, soft and tender, and very appetizing.

2. What types of hotbed chives are there?

Huangjiu No. 1, 791 Xuejiu Wang, Xuejiu No. 4.

2. How do hotbed chives grow?

Hotbed chives are grown from ordinary chives under lightless conditions. They contain no chlorophyll, but they are rich in vitamins, protein, carotene and other nutrients, so their nutritional value is still high. Their planting method is similar to that of yellow garlic chives. It is only necessary, after one autumn harvest of the chives, to cover them with a shed and let them grow freely.

3. What are the planting methods for hotbed chives?

1. Site selection and land preparation:

Hotbed chives like to grow in an environment with loose, fertile soil and good drainage, so when selecting a site, it is best to choose loam with good drainage measures for planting. After the site is selected, the soil should be deeply plowed about 30cm, and field beds about 1.4 m wide should be made, with a small amount of base fertilizer applied to facilitate later planting.

2. Sowing:

(1) Seed selection: There are many types of hotbed chives, but the varieties suitable for planting in China include Huangjiu No. 1, 791 Xuejiu Wang and Xuejiu No. 4, so when selecting seeds, try to choose one of them for planting.

(2) Seed treatment: Soak the seeds in warm water at 53 degrees for about 10 hours, then remove them and mix the seeds with 2-3‰ carbendazim wettable powder for later use.

(3) Sowing method: Evenly plant the treated seeds on the seedbed, then cover with about 1cm of soil, spray with herbicide, and cover with plastic film. Generally, the seeding rate is 2.5 jin per mu, and 3 sq m of seedbed is used for every two.

3. Field planting:

(1) Field planting time: Around mid-April

(2) Preparation before field planting: Dig a field bed 2.2 m wide and 30 m long, with a spacing of 1.4 m between two beds, and water it lightly to facilitate later planting.

(3) Field planting method: After sowing the seeds, bury both sides of the plastic film into the soil, and when they sprout and grow five leaves, apply a small amount of urea and water.

(4) Key points of field planting management:

(4.1) Prepare beds in good time: After field planting of hotbed chives, the beds should be prepared in good time. Generally, when the soil is relatively dry, furrows should be opened and water should be applied. When the soil is wet, the soil should be turned frequently and good aeration should be maintained to promote new root growth.

(4.2) Apply fertilizer in appropriate amounts: Hotbed chives do not have high fertilizer requirements, but this does not mean that no fertilizer is needed. Generally, about 10,000 jin of farmyard manure, about 150 kg of calcium fertilizer, and about 20 kg of urea or 35 kg of potassium fertilizer are applied per mu to ensure sufficient nutrition.

(4.3) Transplant in good time: When hotbed chives grow 4-5 leaves, they should be transplanted to a spacious place according to a reasonable density, and a small amount of water should be applied to promote their growth. When transplanting, the depth should be appropriate, so as to avoid being too deep or too shallow, which would cause late tillering or scattering of hotbed chives. Therefore, when transplanting, try to determine the depth of the planting furrow according to the size of the chive seedlings.

(4.4) Use pesticides reasonably: After the hotbed chive seedlings are field planted, apply 5% phoxim granules and 25% carbendazim wettable powder at the roots, then cover with soil to promote plant growth. Generally, 2.5 kg of each pesticide is used per mu, and then spray once every 5-7 days after planting.

(4.5) Water reasonably: After the chive seedlings are transplanted, water them reasonably. After many new roots have grown, carry out a second watering according to the dryness and wetness of the bed surface. When watering, try to keep the bed surface dry rather than wet, so as to benefit new root growth.

The above are the planting methods for hotbed chives. I hope they are helpful to everyone.
